International Relations = Jobless??

I am a junior currently attending a CSU. My major is International Relations my minor is Middle Eastern studies and I am taking Arabic next semester. All the classes seem like they will be very interesting. I have a knack for PoliSci type courses the only thing is I have no idea what I would want to do w/ this major (setting myself up for disaster maybe?)

Ive looked at all the what can I do with this major sites and some of the jobs seem OK, but idk if I could see myself doing them...Im just curious are there any International Relations majors out there, or even IR grads, what are you planning on doing, or what are you doing now? thanks.

Have you ever heard of 9/11? The federal government has numerous jobs in the Departments of Homeland Security, State, Defense and the Intelligence community (over 16 different agencies).

I'm not technically an IR major, but for all practical purposes, I am. I'm fortunate in that my school and home are both relatively close to DC, which allowed me to intern with a think tank last summer, and an intelligence consulting firm this winter. Right now, my plan after graduation is to work for ~2 years, and then enter an MA program in International Affairs, or possibly law school. If the firm I'm with right now makes me a permanent offer, I'll probably accept it and stay in DC. Otherwise, I might try to find a position with an NGO somewhere in East-Southeast Asia. I'd rather not give out my whole bio online so PM me if you'd like to know more or have any questions.

evolving303,

It really depends on what you want. If you're willing to supplement your IR degree with some quantitative work, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Major is pretty moot for jobs, outside of a few specialized areas.

My suggestion is to do as much interning as possible. It'll really give you insight (and experience/resume building) to help you decide.
