International Relations, looking for fit?

<p>I need help picking colleges as I'm already getting started with commonapp/college admission in general. I really want to get the college stuff done quickly :) I want to apply to alot of colleges but I'm a bit short on colleges that I think would fit me well.</p>

<p>I am interested in international relations but I'm not 100% sure if I will be pursuing that as a major. I might also do psych, linguistics/foreign studies, etc. I want a good healthy balance of schools that are good at IR and LAC's.</p>

(no study, 1 more try left)</p>

<p>SAT II's
Korean (will take november) expecting 800 as I am fluent
Math 2C (will take asap) expecting 800 or near it
mainly taking sat II's for 2 satII requirement schools :/</p>

<p>UW 3.64
W 3.95
(Only 1 AP offered which I am taking my senior year)
I expect a 4.0 UW senior year as my new school is very easy</p>

<p>EC: (note: reason why you only see 2 years is because my new school does not offer what I did at my old school)
Extracurriculars:
2 years Model UN
2 years Math Olympiad
2 years Concert/Marching Band
Varsity Winter Track for 2 years
Varsity Spring Track for 2 years
(Senior year I will play Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball)</p>

Took college level Logic: Principles course at CTY @ John Hopkins (Center for Talented Youth)
-Named Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for the Gifted and took a 20 hour course at SUNY old westbury on creative math problem solving. <em>selective</em></p>

<p>Leadership positions: Member of Leadership Team at local church for 4 years
Vice-President of Student Government (This is something I'm quite proud of. After only 1 year at my school I became vice-president and has never happened before in the history of the school)</p>

<p>Volunteer/Service Work: 200+ hours volunteer at AGAPE (program for persons with disabilities), Mission trip/community work with AIM organization to New Mexico in Navajo Reserve over 5 days, Mission trip/community work with Boston Project to Dorchester, Mission trip/community work with school in York, England.</p>

<p>Honors and Awards: Honors Program, National Merit Commended Student
ACSI Math League 1st Place Precalculus in New Jersey
Teachers Award 11th grade (Teachers pick 1 student they thought was the most engaged and hardest working)
Highest average in British Literature and Precalculus
Writing Award 11th grade (awarded to best writer in school)</p>

<p>I am highly favoring small schools with good weather/dorm, and good institutional financial aid (any good school with at least one of these qualities is good enough for me)</p>

<p>Take a look at University of Miami (FL).</p>

<p>Your list looks reasonable. You might add Johns Hopkins, Princeton and Columbia. All would be reaches but not impossible.</p>

it looks like a good school but I can’t really see how it would be a good fit for me. any specific reason for your suggestion??

thanks but i dont think i even have a .01% chance for princeton, and johns hopkins requires 3SATII’s so I can’t apply. SIPA at columbia seems awesome but cost of living in NYC seems way too high… i will take it into consideration though!</p>

<p>I’d take a look at Grinnell. The weather isn’t great - typical midwestern winters - but as an asian, you are a URM in the midwest, and being male helps at all the LACs. Grinnell stands out because they have are 12% international and offer generous financial and merit aid to achieve their diversity goals. They have no distribution requirements, they don’t look at writing scores on the SAT (your obvious weak point), and they have excellent study abroad and a Grinnell-in-Washington DC program for those who want to work and intern in the city. The facilities are palatial, the classes are small (no intro class bigger than 24 students) and the faculty mentoring and advising is outstanding. They have a strong psych dept (which is considered a science with labs and is very rigorous), and recently hired a linguistics prof. so that area is expanding.</p>

I will definitely apply to grinnell now and see how it goes.</p>

<p>my only complaints are that it doesnt have an “international relations/studies” major but only foreign studies, very rural, and that it doesn’t seem to have a korean community there (not a huge issue but im very in touch with my korean side of culture and i want to focus on korea in the future).</p>
