International Relations & Political Science

Which schools are the best for IR and political science?

I know American University and George Washington University, which I both applied to, are strong in that area.

But how about Boston College, Johns Hopkins, and UPenn?

There are a lot of threads on this forum on the top IR schools. Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Tufts are often considered at or near the top. I’m not sure about BC and UPenn.

Take a look at these threads:

^ Thanks, I looked up threads about good IR programs and I came across those already. I just wanted to know about Boston College and UPenn.

Scoff if you want prestige wh0res, but I’m going to make a suggestion as a current student that probably never crossed you guys’ minds. Ole Miss. I’m a current student who chose to attend Ole Miss to major in International Studies over the likes of Duke, Georgetown, Vandy, and Dartmouth. The Croft Institute for International Studies is quickly becoming one of the University’s most outstanding programs (even if it isn’t getting attention from the USNWR), along with Ole Miss’s top 3 (i think) public honor’s college and Chinese Flagship program. And if you are the caliber of student to consider applying to all of those schools, I can assure you that Ole Miss would definitely be a financial blessing; top students in the HC and Croft are showered with scholarships, making college cost next to nothing even for OOS students. Not saying Ole Miss would be the fit for you, but it’s definitely a star on the rise in this field. Plus, you’ll have the time of your life surrounding yourself with great parties and beautiful people.

New York University also has an outstanding political science and international relations department and I often it see it left out. The only downside is that IR is a honors major within the politics department (meaning after your freshmen year you must apply to the major with a certain minimum GPA after having taken certain prereqs.)

On the whole though, NYU’s politics department is outstanding, ranking above Cornell and Northwestern and considered one of the best anywhere for political methodology/quantitative political analysis/game theory.

@zackfasho @NYU2013 Thanks for the insight. zackfasho, did you apply to Georgetown SFS?

Yes, I was waitlisted, then accepted.
