international relations v. international business

I am looking for guidance as to what to major in, for as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to major in hospitality management, however I’ve recently decided that I no longer want to major in that due to the major being too specific and limited. I’ve always been interested in international relations and global affairs so my mind immediately went to international relations. However I believe that a bachelors degree in international relations is a degree that also doesn’t have a lot of job placement. My question is, would it be better to major in international relations and minor in business, or to major in international business. I believe that over all I am more interested in the international part rather than business part, but I’m thinking that having at least some sort of business focus will be helpful. I was also wondering if a degree in international relations leads to similar job placement as a degree in international business. Any insight towards this subject would be extremely helpful. thank you

I think odds of professional placement are similar and depend mostly on you (look for internships, experience, etc). At some colleges, International business is super selective (for example, USC Columbia) while at others it’s just a management-lite program with a couple language courses thrown in (which is useless).
Look at American U or Tufts, compare to the programs you’re thinking of.
A good indication is how many language courses you’re supposed to take - you should have the equivalent of a minor in at least one language as well as a study abroad semester in both cases.
Another issue is what job you want to have - for a high level job in international relations you need a Master’s degree. To work in a company, a BA/BS is enough.
You can always major in International Relations and minor in Business/management BTW.
