Anyone have any insights??

Very good. Well above average for LACs due to strength in languages and international studies. Also excellent study abroad, with programs in all corners of the globe.

To the extent that “reputation” is relevant (except among graduate and professional schools, where it is significant), folks from abroad (and to a large extent, the domestic “man in the street”), generally display a striking degree of ignorance of the top LAC’s, e.g. Williams, Swarthmore, Amherst, Midd, Pomona, etc. It’s as though if it isn’t a university it’s off the radar. Midd is an excellent school, certainly on a par with most Ivies, and those “in the know” know.

Bit late for the discussion, sorry… but if anyone is still listening…

I had a foreign language major at Midd, spent a good long year abroad, and had very good experiences. Normally Midd contacts faculty abroad and asks them to teach courses at their abroad centers, and pays them very well of course. Universities will most likely have heard of Middlebury in places where there is a study abroad center, but otherwise no… it’s true that for the most part foreigners (and even some foreign academics) will only have heard of harvard, yale, princeton etc… the top schools. It might take a bit of explaining to get across what a liberal arts school is when you’re abroad.
Middlebury also has a lot of alumni living abroad. I’ve already come into contact with a few that are working after graduation. It is not as prevalent as with larger universities, but the Middlebury name has been spread about the planet to a large degree. I have a feeling (and myabe im biased) however that Middlebury is better known than say Amherst or Williams, schools with less robust presence abroad. Hope this helps.
