I got an invitation for this today. Phi Theta Kappa members get kind of a boost as far as scholarships go, it looks like. So that’s probably where they got my info. Does anyone know anything about the legitimacy of this program? Should I consider it some kind of honor I’d mention in the future (similar to if one were a JKCF finalist or something), or simply delete and move on? Either way I can’t afford to go.
i got that invite today too!! Not sure what to think of it. Like is it a scam or not?
I got the same email and I am actually considering going for engineering in Australia. @simplyhere are you considering it as an option?
I am attaching this previous thread that had more information http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/122475-international-scholar-laureate-program.html
Also, when I was browsing around in their website I read that the “envision” thing was for high schoolers. So, I am now a bit confused how helpful it would be to a sophomore. at @Elizabeth93 I would not say it is an honor, unfortunately
I got the same email !!! But its for Medicine and science. I want to go but not sure if it worth it or not too.
I got the same email and a really fancy letter in the mail that gave details for the trip. It seems like one of those too good to be true opportunities. We would get similar invitations in high school to spend a few days in Washington, D.C. I REALLY hope it’s not a scam, and that it actually counts for something towards college applications. I know that they have an option to apply for scholarships to help pay for your trip, but I don’t know if paying over 5k is really worth it. IF ANYONE HAS ANY ADDITIONAL DETAILS, PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS THREAD!!! We have 5 people over here wondering whether or not this is a real opportunity! I’ve been researching ISLP for the last 30 minutes and can’t find anything that either made me believe this is a scam or believe that this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. HELP!!!
Hey yal, I’m sort of in the same boat - I’ll skip the personal doubt and say i’m in a position in my life that I know I can recover from paying their “tuition” within the next few years albeit it pricey. “wwumom” in the post below puts the experience best - and the reason why I’m going. For the experience not so much for the “potential” to get into other colleges or to boast either my ego, wallet or resume. Perhaps I’ve been blind sighted by Gary V’s preaching about high-risk high reward in your 20s (currently, age 20). Not only that, being the first generation to America as a chinese (luckily I have the option to go to China for the ISPL: Engineering and Technology), I did also pay for the OPTIONAL: cultural immersion (+$1500).
Yes, I’ve paid the tuition and will remain in constant contact with the admission advisor on a regular basis. I myself am currently conducting questions to clarify any doubt whether or not this is/was a scam since their really isn’t much information floating around this experience despite their claims (and “wwumom”'s)
Here’s the post I found a few years back from a person/family who actually went: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/122475-international-scholar-laureate-program-p2.html
i’ll check up on replies on a regular basis for anyone who stumbles upon the post and if they’re questions about the program I’ll pass them along to the advisor. I’m a bit afraid of any confidentiality policies I may break should I release his email but admissions@scholarlaureate.org is their contact email…
Edit: 1/23/18 11:39 pm grammar
@Elizabeth93 I would say, if you already know you’re not going to go and have no interest to just delete it and move on. Perhaps later on this year after my experience with them I’ll post about my experience with ISPL and their “legitimacy”
Hello all! I too was nominated to attend the Nursing and Healthcare delegation. I am planning on going. I have spoken to numerous people from this company and I was able to receive an itinerary layout from the previous year and the names of the hotels that we will be staying at. I do not believe it is a scam. I do not believe that Phi Theta Kappa would associate themselves with scammers. This company is definitely in partnership with the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, just check their website. For the people that have doubts, just do some more research before giving any of your money. Try calling Phi Theta Kappa and see if they can offer more information about this program and your nomination. I really hope that this helps
