International student aid chances

Hello there ppl..this is my first post and I am in intl student who will be applying to US . i Have several questions.
1. I want to know that what do colleges(esp the ivys) look at when they decide to give aid to international students..
I have a good sat score of 2250(800 in writing though which i hear doesn't count) and have a decent gpa if one looks at it as a whole over 4 years.. im involved in a wide range of extra curriculars (though haven't excelled at any one sport..so an athletic scholarship is out). And i guess my teacher recommendation will be good too..
Do these stats qualify me for a scholarship of around 60 - 70 percent... I cant pay more than $10k to $15k annually and i hear that costs for intl students runs near $50k usually
2. Do-they look at Sat 2 scores? ive given Math Level 1 and 2.. and if need be can prepare for and give us history in jan.
3.And how important are the common app essays and the supplement essays for addmission and aid?
Thank you in advance

It depends where you’re planning on applying.

ill be applying for regular decision in a month…ive done most of the app stuff only financial aid stuff needs to be done

No, which colleges? The answers to your question vary depending on what calibre of schools you’re applying to.

im applyig to a variety of unis…u penn, cornell, clark u, amherst, yale(just for the heck of it),
chicago and a few others i have to decide on

Somebody Please give me some info!

mancunian : Some Ivies don’t look at whether you need aid when they admit you. That means that if you need aid, they admit you with whatever the amount of money you need, based on your parents income etc. Some do look at whether you need aid, but when they admit you, they give you enough money to come. Cornell (I believe) does not look at aid but might admit you without giving you money.

Writing does count, although to some schools, it counts less than CR and M.

Some colleges do look at SAT 2 scores. Check each college’s website.

Essays are important, make sure they stand out. They have no sway on your aid package, just on admission.

For cost of attendance of about $20000, google University of Minnesota Morris or Bemidji State University.

What is your GPA? If it’s “just ok” and needs your senior year grades to make it decent, then that will likely hurt for ivies.

Do you have a “hook”? If not, I doubt any ivy will accept you since there are many int’ls applying that have hooks.

You may need to apply to schools that will give merit scholarships to int’ls. What is your SAT breakdown?

Ivy League schools do not give merit scholarships. They give need based financial aid ONLY…and it is based on your family’s financial need as computed by the college. You say you can’t “pay” more than a certain amount…but really what matters is what your parents income/assets say they CAN pay…not what they WILL pay.

I would suggest you use one of the EFC calculators using the Institutional Methodology to get a guestimate of what the SCHOOL might expect your parents to contribute to your education. Remember that you will need to enter the numbers in American dollars so be prepared to make that conversion.

Remember too…that not all schools are need blind for admissions for international students. In other words, your ability to pay might be considered by some schools.

thanks for the tip guys
btw what do u mean by “hook”? u mean a killer start to the essay?
secondly does asking for aid have any effect on getting to unis in general. for eg if sum1 asks for aid and a university feels that he or she does not deserve/qualify for aid ,will the university reject him outright or will they give him admission but say that no aid for you’ll have to pay on your own.(ofcourse considering a situation where the applicant would’ve been admitted if he had been able to pay in full)

A “hook” is some unique achievement that you can list on your EC’s. An outstanding hook would be something like… having a book published and having it make the NYT best sellers list.
