International student and med schools in USA

I'm an undergrad international student at UCI and I heard that med schools in USA rarely accept us. Does this mean that I've no chance to get into ANY med school when I graduate? If this is not true, which med schools would accept me? I've a 3.5 gpa and I'll probably get a decent MCAT score. Thanks so much guys

The vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. have a policy of only accepting U.S. citizens or permanent residents and a lot of public medical schools will limit admissions to residents of their states. The very few medical schools that do accept International students only admit a handfull in any given year. To be honest, International applicants to U.S. medical schools probably have a better chance of winning the state lottery than being admitted to a U.S. medical school.

If you want to practice medicine in the U.S. your best course of action would be to go to medical school in your home country and then apply for a residency in the U.S. once you have your medical degree. About a quarter of all residency positions in the U.S. are filled by International Medical Graduates.

Slightly out of date (2008), but a list of US medical schools and their admissions policies toward internationals.

Basically, what Lemaitre1 said is correct.

Hey, that’s my premed advisor who edited that :)

I would imagine that the int’ls that are accepted to US med schools are either Canadian…or students with amazing hooks.

And…someone mentioned in an earlier thread that the int’ls that are accepted have to deposit the funds for all 4 years at one time.

you have no chance sorry; however you can always go to windsor school of medicine in the carribean

I am an international student who did his undergrad in the US and then did his medical school in the US. It is possible but VERY difficult.

You do NOT have to deposit tuition for all 4 years (except for Duke and maybe 1 other school I think).

I am in the process of creating a list of medical schools that at least consider taking international students. Here it is: [US Medical Schools for International Students](http://internationalpremed.blogspot.com/)

Good luck with the process!

^^^

What were your stats? what were your hooks? What distinguished yourself from other int’l applicants?

Were you living in the US as an undergrad because your family is here?

my advice : NEVER go to the US to study medicine , it will give you awful headache for the rest of your life.

what medical school did you go to?? what was your stats.

I am a international student. I went high school in texas, and now im in college also in texas. However, I am not a Texas Resident, which would help me a lot if I were. I have a awesome GPA, at lease currently(but I am only a sophomore). I will be volunteering at a hospital for at least a year(in the process of background check), and I am applying for a summer research program as well. I really want to go to Baylor. Any suggestions?

^Perhaps you can get a Green Card?
