International student chances for NY colleges

@GMTplus7 @cappex of course the perfect solution would be to get some FA, I just said that in an extreme case I would be able to try the option of the loan.
All info I’ve been looking for this months is only about universities in New York so I’m kind of lost if you ask me for out-of-there colleges, but if you think that it would be a good option I will look for universities out of New York State too.

@merc81 that is what I thought, I think that I would choose at least one safety pick, but I’m not sure of which one since above I’ve been told that Pace or CUNY are not good options.

Finding a good fit will depend on your academic interests, the environment you prefer (e.g., urban vs. rural) and whether you would like to study at a university or a purely undergraduate focused college. Whether an option is good or not depends on what you are looking for.

Go to Google Maps. Enter in driving directions from NYC to Syracuse University: 250 miles (400 km). Use that distance as a radius to draw circle around NYC. That circle will encompasses the states of:
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, plus Washington D.C.

Money matters more than geography. The bottom line is that u need a school that will give u money. Don’t waste your effort on schools that don’t give generous aid to int’l students-- there’s absolutely no point. Don’t count on your aunt to co-sign a loan. As fond as I am of my nieces & nephews, I am not willing to co-sign a student loan for them for them so they can go to a fancier school.

What will be your major? IMHO, selecting or recommending schools, without knowing what you intended major is is rather myopic. What is the maximum amount that your parents can contribute to your college education on an annual basis (without loans)? Is it possible to live with your aunt for 4 years (rent free), while attending college in NYC? Eliminating your Room & Board cost will go a far way in minimizing your educational cost. The chance of you getting significant financial aid as an international student (with your stats), is quite low.

If you want to go to college in NYC, the CUNY 4-year colleges are your best low cost option (tuition only will be ~17K/yr; with R&B, COA ~$30K-$34K). If your major is engineering, look at CUNY-City College and for business, CUNY-Baruch/Brooklyn College/Queens College). I know many international students who attended one of these CUNY schools and eventually went back to their home country after graduation or went on to top graduate schools.

The schools on your list (or being recommended), without financial aid, will run you anywhere from $52K-$76K per year.

@electrik0 you have a good list for a 3.4 UW GPA and 2100 SAT. What you have to focus on is the financial side and how each school treats international students.

I am also thinking you should add Muhlenberg.

@Jamrock411 my parents would be able to contribute with aprox 15 k each year, and yes, my aunt would have no problem if I have to live with her.

@ScaredNJDad so what you think is that I have chances to be accepted but no few chances of financial aid?

@electrik0 You will have to investigate the financial aid on a case by case basis. The general rule is that the more selective the school the better the aid. You can pretty much bet that if you get into Colgate for example the aid will be better than Manhattan College, but the only way to know is ask, and you need family income and asset data to get the answer.

Do the calculators on each school’s website after you get the financial details you need.

Do you have any idea about your family’s annual income?

@ScaredNJDad I don’t have that data, but I can talk to my parents and get it.
So you recommend me to ask and search through those univerisities websites?

I made this list, what do you think:

Syracuse
NYU
Siena college
Pace
Union college
Colgate
CUNY
St. Lawrence

Would you add Manhattan College or/and Scranton too?
I picked two safeties (Pace and CUNY), couple reaches (Syracuse, Siena…) and two dreams (NYU and Colgate). Is that okay?

Syracuse - match
NYU - slight reach
Siena college - match
Pace - match
Union college -match
Colgate - slight reach
CUNY - safety
St. Lawrence - match

@cappex do you think that I really am a slight reach in Colgate and/or NYU? Thank you!

For colgate, you can probably emphasize your roots in Colombia. you would maximize your chances if you apply ed1.

I am from Romania and I have the exact same problem.I would love to go to NYU but I heard the financial aid for international students is very limited…If you do get in I don’t think you would get financial aid
