International Student Cost

How much money can an international student get in any form (aid, scholarships or work) in University of Michigan Engineering? Is there a possibility to lower the cost from the estimated cost of $57,432 for non residents?

There’s more information we’d need than that, like parental income and such. The Net Price Calculator has an option for international students, so I’d try there. My understanding though it that internationals are pretty much the bottom of the totem as far as aid goes.

Michigan does not provide FA to international students.

No need based aids but certain merit aid may still be available to international students.

@CautiousOptimist @Alexandre @billcsho Well I am not looking for need based financial aid. What I am looking for is a part time job, internship or a merit aid possiblity that could ease the burden of the overall cost. Is there such a possibility ,if yes then what sort of amount can I expect to get from them?

Note that you are very limited in job as an international student. Internship would be considered practical training which also has a time limit and requires work permit for international students.

@AspireIvy1 Like @billcsho mentioned, it’s not as easy as just getting a job, and it isn’t Michigan’s choice, it’s the federal government making that call. It may not be impossible, but it’s a fair deal harder. You probably wouldn’t be eligible for federal work-study so it really wouldn’t be Michigan-specific. Maybe if you tried the Financial Aid board you’d find more international students with experiences to share or actual financial aid officers, since most of the people here are domestic students or their parents, so most of us have never had to worry about those regulations.

As for merit aid you might be able to get some, though I think most of the ones that need a separate application are done. You could still get some based on your admissions application but without knowing anything about your profile (and even if we did) it’s pretty hard to judge your chances.

You can work during the school year for a maximum of 20 hours. And in the Spring/Summer semesters you can work full time. As long as the work you do specifically benefits the uofm community. So for example, you can work at the Starbucks in Michigan Union, but not the one on State Street. You can always try interning at a Canadian/British company. The pay(11$) at dining halls is among the best if you don’t have any prior experience you can apply towards an office job.

So you can basically earn 220$ a week while in school. So basically the maximum you can earn while studying in school and working at the dining at 11$ an hour is
(16+16)1120 School year + (402011)

Basically comes out to 15000. That is a significant dent in the 57k a year with housing. The tuition without that is ~44000. So taking out 550/month rent at a decent place. Your yearly off campus housing comes to 550*12 = 6600. You get 1 free meal for every shift you work so, it comes out to 50k/year with 6 meals a week(assuming you work 1 shift every day). Total after working is 35k/ year and that is the least you have to spend to live in Ann Arbor for a year, study full time at the uofm; while working part time while school is in session, and full time when it’s not//

Hope this is satisfactory.
