International Student Financial Aid Application.

Well, I was filling out the ISFAA for the University of Chicago, when I started having some doubts for a couple of questions:

1) Expected Visa Type: ?

2) List the colleges you're applying to ----- This is none of anybody's business. Since I'm applying to the U.Chicago, I'm not sure it'll be very happy when it knows that I'm also applying to places like Harvard and Yale. What do I write for this?

Many colleges ask where else you’ve applied …
Just mention 3-4 colleges … What’s da prob?

BTW, applying to CS department?

rsaxena, I think most international students come to US on F-1 visa. You might find some useful info here: [Student Visas](<a href=“404 - Page Not Found”>404 - Page Not Found)

I don’t know why they are asking for information about other schools. That does sound strange but my gut feeling is that it won’t have any impact on admission.

F-1 visa
and in my application I stated my top colleges ( honestly) cause a counselor here told me that if they like, they can easily check up on a candidate and the colleges they are applying to… and as for why give the best colleges? Suppose you’re a really strong candidate and they really want to keep you there, then they might raise that aid award, thinking that others might offer you more . I don’t know how far this is applicable to U Chicago, but many other colleges also ask for ISFAA, and this is the general view … again, something that a counselor at USIEF told me…

You can write F1 Student as your expected visa.
Also, colleges won’t care about your list. Its immaterial to most of them.

No counseling here in Rajasthan…

So far, I’ve come across only 2 colleges that ask if you’ve applied newhere else: RHIT and RPI

EDIT: And purdue

International Student Financial Aid Application is required b …? Any specific colleges?

And Purdue didn’t ask me which colleges I applied. Where exactly do they ask this?

Except that I’m not a strong candidate, let alone “really strong”.

What is the “most of them” doing there in your statement?

-----------Thank you everyone for the F-1 information.

I have applied to Mount Holyoke and Bryn Mawr, and they both need ISFAA, U Chicago as stated earlier, then of course some colleges accept ISFAA in lieu of PROFILE( ISFAA’s way cheaper…lol…)…Lots of colleges, now that I come to think of it…

Btw, to all those filling up ISFAA, how much are you putting as your expected family contribution?? I am still in two minds…whether to overstate( and then scramble through with loans, et al) or understate?( that might put my application under a more unfavorable position…:(

^ Why not truthfully state?

^^desperado, you’re a girl???
Here I was thinking you’re a guy. Hi!
ISFAA’s free, lol. But CSS is better accepted by colleges I hear. You need no supporting docs then. And fee waivers are easy to get if one has submitted CSS.

^lol, pixie!.. yeah! well, at least my gender earned me a full toothed smile… there I return one…

Why not truthfully state?? Well, tbh, my EFC wouldn’t be more than a, say. 4000 $( with loan and all, it should go up)… which is way, way way less than what I see my friends putting in… and it freaks me out!! Somehow, I don’t get a very good vibe form the colleges with this sorta financial situation…

btw, pixie, forgot to ask… are you going for any women’s colleges??? Much as I hate the single-sex education, I have to admit aid and admission( see, aid precedes admission) prospects look good…

Oh and does the Indian Government impose restrictions on the exchange and release of funds for study in the United States?

Are you talking about loans? I think most banks give around 20 l in loan, that’s the max … As for restriction, 5-7 years payment time, maybe collateral security( some banks)… is that waht you are looking for??

private funds don’t come under restrictions, ok I dont have any idea about that…

on a different note, the threads on CC especially acceptance ones are horrific!

desperado,
I have applied to Smith and Wellesley in women’s colleges. Mt Holyoke aid for internationals is very attractive (Heck, it’s more than all ivies except Yale and Harvard I think?) and it’s sciences are said to be good. I just don’t want to write that extra paper…I might apply if I get too nervous about Smith.
Why Bryn Mawr and not Smith bdw?

Tbh, I like the idea of a single sex education too in a way. The Sisterhood! Plus as the saying goes, “It’s not a girls college without men, it’s a women’s college without boys”;). Only thing worrying me is academic rigor might not be up par with the best co-ed schools. Wellesley definitely is very rigorous(if it were co-ed then it would have a much much lower acceptance rate, low teens atleast), and smith is reputed to be so…
What have you heard about Holyoke?

I don’t know. That question was asked in the ISFAA again. What did you mark?

@ pixie…
I know a Holyoke alum, and she raves about it( But then so would I if I happen to be an alum of say, Mickey Mouse University… ) I don’t know whether she was speaking out of college pride or she giving me a genuine review… but oh, that aid!! I literally turned a deaf ear to everything else and plunged in… I already had that paper ready so no looking back! Smith seems a great college but apart from that I have no idea whatsoever… I mean its not a very visible college, all that you get is its reputation, and I cant seem to rely simply on that… If only I had a chance to know it better! Again, I might throw in an application at the last moment… I am in two minds. Bryn Mawr, again, apart from the usual parameters, gut feeling, seems good somehow!

I know it’s ridiculous the way I’m selecting colleges, but beyond the facade of an excellence-academics-innovation-research, what is the college like?? There, we can’t help but rely on vague stuff…

Oh, I think I heard another quote-" At a women’s college, you don’t get a feeling that women and men are equal, in fact women are much superior" ( Not my view, I don’t want to start a battle of the sexes!)
Lol, we should start a separate thread!

@ rsaxena… that was a ‘no’ answer, I am entirely sure how, dad filled up the form!

Desperado-- Sorry for not replying earlier, I wasn’t o/l long enough.

Yes, there’s quite a scarcity of girls on this forum, so I’m always glad to welcome a new one! :)

^^And yes, the alumnus of MHC I know is quite happy with the sciences there too. (She went onto Johns Hopkins for med). The campus is beyuutiful!(better than Smith campus)
What did you write that paper on? I still haven’t done MHC because I’m too lazy to think up something atm. Any tips?
To cut a long story short, I too chose MHC and Smith because I knew alumni from the schools. Wellesley however, is a different thing altogether. Idk anyone there personally, but I’m quite crazy about it.
