I am transferee from community college. This is my first semester in San Jose State University and it is rather unpleasant one... Before school started, I was only able to register one class and had to go under wait-list for all other classes because other classes were already all full by the time I tried to register.

When I went to all my wait-listed classes, the professor was not able to add anyone because of this year's strict regulation due to financial crisis (CA STATE). Even if there was open slots, it was no more than 3-4 while there were 20+ students waiting to add.

Now, I can not seem to register for any classes and because this is my junior year, I have limited choices due to prerequisites for advanced business classes. I know that I have to maintain 12 units in this university to maintain my visa, however; my choice is very limited because I only have only one class registered while other business classes are closed. I would really appreciate it if I can seek advice from someone.

could you register for classes that are outside your major but useful down the line? Writing classes? Public speaking? anything that is just useful in terms of life skills? Not implying that you need help but just a way to hang in there until you finish your major.

Are you done with all of your general education requirements? If not, this would be the perfect time to take those random classes in history and literature and science, or maybe start a foreign language. You could also consider enrolling in the advanced classes anyway and studying the material for the prerequisites on your own. (I wouldn't recommend a full schedule of advanced classes whose prerequisites you don't have, but one or two should be doable if you only take the minimum of 12 credits.) Or maybe you could get independent study credit for learning the material on your own. Would the lack of business classes in your schedule this semester force you to postpone graduation?

Also talk to upperclass students and see how much of an issue the class caps are for them. If this is a common problem, I strongly suggest that you transfer again...

I did finish all my lower division classes. I am hesitant to add unnecessary classes because of tuition. Each classes cost around $1200. sigh... Does anybody know how long I can stay in the country without registering for school? This is because if nothing works out, I may be able to register at different community college at March.

Go to see your major advisor on Monday. Sit in front of his/her office until someone helps you with your schedule. You are a second semester Junior and you should be in the classes in your major field. It is your advisor's job to get you into the classes you need. Be nice, but be a pest until you have a full schedule that is appropriate for your major.

These schools usually have an international advisor. That person would be able to tell you about student visa requirements and may be able to help.

I'm afraid this problem will not end soon, they are now saying to plan on taking 6 years to graduate from a CSU. I would advise you to take those tuition dollars to a school you'll be able to get out of more easily. Have you looked at the SUNY schools in NY?
