International student help

Hi,
I'm an international student and I was just deferred from UMICH. I've heard things about other colleges such as brown that they just defer a great number of students and has a low acceptance rate (for deferred students), and I was wondering if it thats the case with UMICH seeing as how there are I think over 2200 students that have applied. Furthermore, do you guys think that being an international student will affect my admission?

Thanks for your time

What were your stats? SAT/ACT, AP scores, grades, school rank etc... And where are you from?

My stats are relatively low...SAT: V600 M720
I studied in Turkey from 9-11th grade. I started the IB in year 11 and my predicted grades were:
HL:
History 6
Economics: 7
Physics: 6
SL:
Math methods: 7
French B: 5
English A1: 4
but because of my fathers job we moved to NY and i started my senior year here. I take 2 out of a possible 3 AP classes (calc AB and chem). My first term average was around 92.
I was an intern for the EU general secretary in Ankara Turkey for 2 weeks.
MUN for 3 years, and Ill probably secretary-general or at least a chair for a conference that will be held in our school,
School Orchestra for 3 years,
Jazz band for 3 years,
School rock band for 1 year hehe
Varsity soccer, defence
vice president of debate club this year
I also sent them a video of me playing the 3rd movement of Winter, of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons on electric guitar in a concert held in my school.
I also sent them a letter stating that its not that I didnt continue IB because its rigor but that i couldnt because there were no schools that I could have went to in NY that had IB, didnt have a tuition of 20K+, and had the courses I was previously taking.
Lastly, I sent my application really late (around 27th of December).

Oh, my GPA....:
9th: 2.06
10th: 2.57
11: 3.14
12: so far around 90+.
I was really suprised that i was deferred and was expecting a rejection because of my extremely low GPA and other stats, and was happy that I was instead deffered, but I realized that it was probably because they werent really thinking of me, but still wanted to keep the option open untill the last second that is good for them, which is what I'm asking, as well as your thoughts on my admission. Thanks your time

I am not surprised you were not rejected. An international student is subject to different admissions consideration, since different countries grade differently. In the Middle East, a 75% is an A. In the US, a 75% is a C. But if a student with a 75% average in the Middle East moves to the US, chances are, her/his average will jup to 90%+ and that student will remain an A student. Your high SAT score (considering your native tongue isn't English) and your 90%+ average this year prove that your school's grading in Turkey was very tough and as such, your lower grades are understandable. Your only weakness seems to be English...with isn't your native language anyway.

Are you simply taking your grades from your IB program in Turkey and converting them to a US GPA? If that's the case, you are not doing it right. I mean, a student who is expected to get 7s and 6s in the IB is generally a 3.5+ student. I do not think you fully appreciate the conversion from Turkish to US standards. Luckily, universities do.

Also remember that your 9th grade does not count. Michigan does not consider your 9th grade.

All this said, I think your chances with Michigan are decent but not good, but you certainly have a shot provided your mid-year report is good.

Keep us posted...and best of luck.

Thanks a lot Alexandre. I am not converting my GPA at all, the GPAs I gave to you were the ones on my transcript. I went to an international school that did the IB and they didnt really think they should lower the standards for a high grade, unlike my new school where a 100 on test is sometimes the norm...I do however hope the universities also aknowledge the fact that I had to take both the full IB programme a long with the classes the Turkish curriculum required, so its like 2 schools in one in a sense. Oh well, like I said, thanks a lot for your help. What bothers me is that April 15th is pretty late and I'll probably decide by the first week of April (after visiting).

BTW I noticed you have a lot of information about UMICH, what ties do you have with the school?

Thanks

I am merely a Michigan grad, AB Economics and History, class of '96.

Your predicted IB grades will probably be weighted a lot more than your 10th and 11th GPA (not easy to compare grades between different school systems).

Your IB score at 35-38 is good but not outstanding. However, your current grades (90+) certainly prove that you are a good student. Suggest you ask your school counselor to send in your mid-year grade ... if you have not already done so.
