International Student Interested in Smith!

Hi everybody! I'm a international student who are going to apply for SC this year. I simply fall in love with Smith College after reading Fiske Guide to College. Smith looks just great on that book!!!! My scores are CR600, W770, M800, TOEFL103. Do I have a chance??
And here are some of my concerns:

1)The lesbian issue... Just asking.
2)Is living in a small town that boring? I saw people complaining about it and I just want to make sure if it's really that boring..
3)Does every student has the chance to do internship and going aboard?
4)Are you guys happy living and studying in Smith? How do you like the college?
5)Need more 'downs' about Smith..

Thanks=]!

1) There is no lesbian issue. You must be gay tolerant or you will be unhappy at Smith. Otoh, you aren’t going to be “converted” against your will and the incidence of sexual harassment is far below that which takes place at a typical co-ed school.

2) There are towns of 30,000 and there are towns of 30,000. Northampton has art, music, restaurants, etc. Boston is 2 hours away, New York about 3 hours, both variable due to traffic.

3) Every student can do an internship and/or go abroad. You have to apply. For some abroad programs, there are language proficiency requirements that have to be met by a combination of course level and grade. Others have no language requirement as courses are taught in English and the curriculum includes elementary and intermediate courses in the home country language…if you study in England, you come back sounding like Helen Mirren.

1) Well, I think you just need to be more specific about what you’re asking. What does the “lesbian issue” mean?

2) I think the biggest fear about being in a small town for college is that you’ll get bored. I didn’t ever find Northampton boring, though I sometimes found it annoying that the restaurants don’t stay open that late. The bars are very strict, so don’t expect to be doing a lot of late night partying in town either before your 21st birthday. The great thing about Northampton though was, as TD said there’s art, music, lots of great restarants, cool shopping. I found that even though I spent most of four years there, there were still new stores and places to discover. I would not consider it a “boring” town at all.

I’ll just skip to 4) Yes, I was very happy at Smith. Hopefully not the happiest years of my life, but they certainly were the happiest years up to that point. Smith was my home and the people in it were my family. Even though I graduated 1.5 years ago, I still miss it all the time.

as for 5) My biggest complaint about Smith was that there’s a lot of hoops to jump through to get to what you want. for a small college, it has a lot of red tape.

By saying lesbian issue I mean are there a lot of lesbian on campus? No offence I just need to be prepared…

It’s really helpful!
OMG I hope I could get in and have a great time as SmithieandProud described><! Do you guys think I have a chance and can you offer some tips for the supplementary essays? I’ve just finished my Smith essays yesterday=]

Chloe, there have been quite a number of discussions on the Smith forum about the presence of lesbians on campus. I’d recommend you look at the two discussions at the top of the Smith forum (Insider’s Guide to Smith and Why All-Women’s Colleges) as well as earlier posts dating back to at least a year. If you don’t know how to find older questions, go to the bottom of the page where it says Display Options, find the drop-down option that displays time and select how far back you want to view discussions.

As for an evaluation of your chances, it’s a bit hard to say because you haven’t really told us much about yourself, other than your SAT and TOEFL scores. Where are you from? Do you have a GPA? What activities have you pursued?

My daughter is a sophomore and absolutely loves, loves, LOVES SMITH and wouldn’t consider being anyplace else! She loves Northampton; it’s a great college town with lots to offer.

I’ll take a look at it right away=]
It’s nice to know that your daughter loves Smith, that just confirms me of my decision!
I’m from China, and our GPA calculate system provides only ABCD, and I’m straight A(scale: 100-85).
I take part in extracurricular activities such as debate, graphic design, organizing and founding student clubs etc. I don’t think I have a really splendid CV but still I’d say that I am active as a leader at school.
I have not decided my major yet, but I have an inclination of exploring the field of international studies and diplomacy.
Hmm…Pretty much like that…Thank you so much!

Chloe, I’m not an admission officer and I don’t really know how internationals are evaluated by the admission office, but I think you have a reasonable chance of being admitted. Your GPA and SATs are fine, your extra-curriculars are probably OK, given the detail you provided. Good luck!

We don’t have the best international relations program - IR isn’t a major, although there is a five college certificate program and you can concentrate on it if you’re majoring in Gov. You might want to keep that in mind.

Other than that:
Yes, it’s a very gay school. If that weirds you out, I really wouldn’t worry about it because if you come here you’re guaranteed to find it completely natural in a couple of weeks. It’s not an ‘issue’, other than the fact that sexuality/discrimination based on sexuality is given a lot more importance than other issues in the world here.

The fact that everything closes super early can be annoying. But there’s always something to do around campus, even if it’s just sitting around dancing to 80s music with your friend or decorating your friend’s room, pillows and underwear drawer with pictures of Keanu Reeves because she loathes him. It’s an interesting town, and you can always take the bus to Amherst if you want something else to do on weekends.

I don’t know too much about internships and study abroad because I’m a first year, but it seems like a lot of people go abroad junior year. A LOT.

I’m overall very very happy, and don’t think I’d want to be anywhere else. It can be stressful, but also quirky and interesting and fun, and it’s so great to live in houses. It’s a much more sheltered life and you feel more cared-about than at other schools. And the people can be very interesting and much more creative than I’ve seen at most other places.

Downs - I miss guys a fair bit. It can be hard to be a straight girl at Smith. Also, you have to work a lot harder for good parties - Smith parties can get old. The opportunities are there - you can join sororities at UMass and take the bus out every weekend, the debate team goes to other schools every weekend, there are concerts and electronic parties at Diva’s (this nightclub) some Fridays - but if you’re lazy and don’t feel like putting in the effort, you end up watching 90210 in the laundry room in your pyjamas some Friday nights. Some of the extracurriculars aren’t as good as other schools of Smith’s caliber, which is both a pro and a con: they’re easier to participate in because anyone can participate, but we don’t win too many competitions because it’s not terribly intensive (for example, we rarely break at debate tournaments, the paper isn’t wonderful). BUT the more-opportunities thing is great - one of the editors on the paper is a first year. The student government association is, in my biased opinion, a lot better than ones at other schools. Much more involved, much more opinionated.

Hey I am also applying from China…Hope we both get in.

hey!!
I am an international student.
I want to apply to Smith under the early decision II plan.
I am also applying for financial aid.
The problem is that Smith asks for the 2011/2012 international student financial aid report.
[Smith College: Financial Aid](http://www.smith.edu/finaid/prospect/apply_intl_nonusa.php)
But this application is only available on the PDF format and I don’t konow how I am supposed to fill it. I have looked on the collegeboard’s website but I don’t find this application, there’s only the CSS profile.
Does anyone how to fill this application?
P.S:If there is other documents required, please let me know.
Thank you

^^
I think you are supposed to print it out and mail it to them? at least that’s what I’m doing

If you have any questions about forms, the best way to get an accurate answer is to call admissions. Just call; that’s what they’re there for.
