International student needing aid -- chances at Yale SCEA?

Thank you. I have another question: if I attach more than is asked for, e.g. extra essays, activity lists, will it be to my advantage, or will the adcoms ignore them?

yeah I wanna see that graph if such a thing exists..

You'll have no problem getting into most of them think.

amb3r, as I said earlier already, Middlebury/Northwestern have higher stats than JHU.

I have to say some of you have given bad advice. This is an International asking for siginificant amount of FA. This is a big deal for any school that isn't need-blind for internationals. I knew a student from China asking for full-ride and he got rejected from bunch of schools, including some that are supposedly "safeties". He got accepted to Williams and Earlham and that's most likley because three faculty members in his school went to Williams (he was on scholarship to attend a boarding school in Williamstown, MA). He could have easily ended up with only Earlham and we are talking about a kid that the teachers thought as the brightest they'd ever taught. His first year GPA at Williams was 4.0 while he was planning to major in Econ and English. I lost touch with him after that but I wouldn't be surprised if he graduated with the highest distinction there. That's 10 years ago! You can imagine the competition is even worse now.

OP,
Northwestern's admission for internationals is not need-blind and they would not admit you without giving what you asked for. NU would normally be a safety for you if you don't ask for money. But since you need them to pay 80%, that makes it a reach also.

By the way, middlebury and williams has no chemical engineering in case you care.

I think you cant really compare the two cases because 1. He's not from China- this is a really big deal 2. He's one of the top in RJC- another big deal because rjc is better than any boarding school in Williamstown, featured in US journals.. Yeap, no one is a shoe in but..but He has a good chance..

You are nitpicking. I never say his situation was identical. You assumed I wasn't aware of those and that's not true. I didn't mention them but then I also didn't mention my friend's list wasn't nearly as top-heavy as OP's. The things you mentioned are countered by the fact that the schools my friend applied to were not as top-heavy as OP; it was 10 years ago with less applicants; also he got 3 teachers that were Williams alums and they actually went over to the admission to lobby for him. That year, I was told Williams had only FIVE scholarships available for internationals and my friend was one of them.

This is from NU's website:

[quote]
The usual selective admission criteria, as well as the amount of financial aid needed by an applicant, will be factors in the admission committee's decision. As a result, Northwestern will not offer admission to some candidates who are otherwise well-qualified. For these reasons, the admission rate for international applicants requesting aid is substantially lower than for those not requesting aid.

i wasnt nit picking.. but you are a bit over sensitive.. i was just voicing out what i think.. well i didn say you werent aware of the china.rjc thing.. but since you didn mention it.. so i just mentioned them..
and what's wrong with what i said? and i didn say i disagree with you.. anyone who has read the net knows that boeing's chances (like any other internationals') would be much greater had he been richer.. but we just think that he is MAYBE one of those who is hard to reject because of his achievements.. we didn say he's a shoe in..

you can voice out what you think and i just refuted what you said. specificly, you said i "can't compare the two cases". those were your words. i didn't compare. i used someone i knew as an example to point out the admission is a totally different animal when fa is needed for international. you didn't "just mention" china and rjc; you mentioned them to explain why they shouldn't be compared. looks like you didn't even know what your thought process was.

no wonder you have 3471 posts..

Sniff around people's profile and then engage in ad hominem attack. That's your style on a discussion board?

i didn sniff around your profile.. didn bother to.. the no. of posts is there for all to be seen when i'm typing this.. well i'm off to my applications.. cya.. such banter at least livens things up..

Well actually, looking at my school mates' stats, e.g. upwards three Olympiad Golds and at least one International Olympiad medal, I don't think I'll even make it for Yale. I'm counting more on Williams and Middlebury now, but will still apply Yale SCEA.

Don't worry, you are a superb applicant! I am sure you will get into most schools :D

Sent off my application to Yale! crosses fingers

I'd say you're in everywhere.

I think you will be in everywhere and nowhere.

For anyone here who cares, I got deferred by Yale. Today is seriously one of the worst day of my life. :(

Hey, I'm with you brother, I just got owned (deferred) from Stanford. Sucks to be stuck in this purgatory.

Dude, i'm also a Malaysian scholar, studying in ACS(I) IB, and frankly your record owns mine and then some (can take a look a few threads above yours). If you got deferred by yale, i'm seriously fearing for my apps now, even if most aren't as high level as yale... Nvm, there's always NUS rite? :-D

jus_3c, NUS for the win! :D

Which part of Malaysia are you from?
