International Student Needs Suggestions

I'm asking for help from experts here for a senior who goes to my son's school. Deadlines are approaching, and she has yet to finalize a realistic list of colleges. She is a good student and interesting person, very fluent in English (won't need TOEFL), from Germany with Russian roots, went to boarding school in England for grade 9, now here grades 10-12.

She would like a big school in a big city, preferably on the east coast. GPA 3.68, SAT CR 550, M 610, W 550 (1710). She aspires to medical school and would like to become a psychiatrist, thinking of a major in Psychology. She has reaches, but is in need of matches and safeties. Her parents can pay full tuition.

She needs advice on realistic choices. Would anybody like to weigh in with some college possibilities? I can ask her for more info, if that would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

As an international (unless she has permanent resident status), her chances for obtaining admission to a US medical school are extremely poor. (And you’d be doing her a kindness to tell her that upfront.) Fewer than 200 internationals are accepted annually into all US MD programs combined. Many years the number is <100.

https://www.aamc.org/download/159428/data/table3.pdf

International acceptance numbers are listed (under foreign) at the very bottom of the grid.

Thanks for the input. That is disappointing to hear, but possibly she is intending medical school in Germany.

Suggestions still appreciated about undergrad.

What is her visa status, and what can her family pay?

While her academic transcript will probably be evaluated alongside those of her US peers, unless she has a green card or is in a state that considers her instate for tuition purposes she will be in the international pool for financial aid.

Point her to the international students forum. She should get some ideas there.

She doesn’t get to decide whether or not she needs to take the TOEFL. The colleges and universities set their own policies about that. With only four years in English-language schools many (if not most) colleges and universities will require an English proficiency exam.

I believe that in Germany, med school is direct admit from high school. If she is serious about a medical career, she should go home for med school.

Medical school in Germany is indeed a direct admit from high school. Most, if not all, European medical programs are direct admission.

Thanks to all. This has been very helpful. Her family is wealthy and able to easily pay all expenses, so that does not hurt. I’ve suggested to her that she needs to confirm with each individual school whether she needs to take the TOEFL.

Here is the list she just gave me:

Columbia (she knows that this is a stratospheric reach)
NYU (reach again)
Boston U
Sarah Lawrence
Penn State
U of IL Chicago
U of Iowa

These seem all over the map, but some seem reasonable. Comments would be appreciated!

Additionally…she plays Varsity tennis and has been to state competition. Has also made it to state in Speech Comp (mime, improv). She’s trilingual–German Russian, English.
Thanks again.
