What are the most common problems international students face once they’ve started school in another country?
Hello there i’ve studied in ukraine for 1 year (in russian preparation class)Now i study in Bulgaria.Common problem is the learning a new foreign language maybe after that next problem is Do you feel comfortable about surroundings?(City,College, people)Next problem is the maybe residental permit fees but it depends on the country.Next problem is based on the learning foreign language you know that everbody doesn’t know english besides someone who doesn’t know english would try to trick you(renting a house) saying higher price that worths common issues are like these.
Would you like to ask other questions?
Way too big of a question! The degree of difference between the home country and the new country obviously plays a role: from the obvious (language, homogeneity) to the practical (how things work) to the social (music, food, recreational activities).
As a former international student, and the parent to kids who have been in schools on 3 continents, I would say it’s the small things that are the hardest- because you expect and are prepared for the big things.
It also comes in waves: when you first arrive you are full of the excitement of the new, and (depending on the place) people can be kind or helpful. But after a while you hit a period where everything just seems hard. The weather has turned cold, you have a cold, people who seemed warm and friendly now seem more involved in their own life, you want a certain comfort food and you can’t find it - or you can find it at a hideous price at an import store that is depressingly hard to get to. And your library card still isn’t working properly. And then it’s all just too much.
The thing to remember is that this dark patch passes as well! You have a great skype call home, a care package comes from your mum, somebody in the pharmacy where you are trying to find a medicine for your cold that looks even halfway familiar turns out to be kind and knows just what you need, you discover a food section with things you like in the corner shop, you do particularly well on an assignment, you suddenly realize that you got the joke in the new language.
Getting involved in study groups and student activities with different groups of people is a really great thing, and can make all the difference.
I agree @collegemom3717 it’s a broad question to ask. I appreciate the insight ALOT
seems like you’ve experienced it all too well. I surely hope to hear more from you.
@Whiteknownledge wow! that’s a lot of problem. and I’m pretty sure I’m going to face most of those as well. Next question would be how did you face all those
