International student, question about the F-1 visa

Hello !

I'm a student from Senegal. I started college in January 2013 but I left the U.S. 6 months later without properly warning my school's international student office. I did call the school to know if there was a procedure to follow by students who want to withdraw from the college. I precised I was an international student holding a F-1 visa and my call was directed to the international office. The person to whom I talked there told me I could just drop my classes.

A few days later I received an e-mail from an the international student coordinator telling me that my I-20 was about to be terminated. I told him about the time I called, the answer I was given and that I had already left the U.S..

I was not ready to overcome the homesickness and cultural shock I went through, that's why I left brutally. I know there's a system and I must respect it. So is there still a chance I could get a visa to study in the U.S. again ?

You did follow protocol last time. Your last F-1 visa was cancelled because you were no longer enrolled as a student. That’s perfectly fine!

When you are ready to go back, the college will issue a new I-20 and you’ll simply apply for a new visa. There’s no reason why your previous student visa should be an obstacle in obtaining a new visa. (If your visa had gotten cancelled because you were working without authorization or committing crimes, that would be a different story…)

I’m fine then !! I was just worried about the fact that my I-20 hadn’t been signed before I left.

Thanks a lot !!
