Hello everybody..
I am currently a first-year student (with sophomore credit standing) at the isenberg school of management at the university of massachusetts amherst. i am an international student from germany. i now want to transfer and I want to apply to: Harvard, Columbia, NYU and BU. the reason why I want to transfer is a change in my major. I realize that my school has a good business program, however, I want to major in economics and political science now after having had a couple internships etc. and my school does not offer a great program in these disciplines.
i have had several internships, including one at a private bank in frankfurt and a recent one at the european parliament in brussels in the department of economical and monetary affairs, which is the main reason why I want to change my major..my special field of interest is the european free trade zone and its impact on european and non-european counries and my school does not offer faculty that have interests in that area...and the economics/political science departments are not much interrelated (unlike the majors themselves..)
i also just received an internship offer (which I accepted) from JP Morgan in London for this summer in the area of equity capital markets. i have done lots of extra curriculars, including being the captain of my basketball team in germany (top16 teams in german youth championships), being a member of the board in the youth press organization germany as well as in a political party. so i think i have it covered for internships etc...I am also a TA for a German class at my current school (I contacted the german departments at the schools which I will be applying to and theyll be happy to have me there as a TA...)
now the stats:
I did 10 years of high school in germany, and my last year as an exchange student in the US. my total GPA was a 3.6 (unweighted). I know thats not good..and my SATs were even worse: 490V, 500W, 660M, SAT2: 730 German, 630 math level 2
however, in the TOEFL i got a 107/120...and I want to mention I took the SATs after being in the US only for 1.5 months..so I dont know how heavy they should weight them.
I took 20 credits last semester at UMASS (tough classes, including teaching the german class) and got a 3.91
this semester I am taking 2 graduate level courses in finance and management and I am aiming at all As (19 credits)
I will be able to obtain two really good recommendations from professors here also...
I was wondering what you guys think my chances are at the schools that I am applying to..and should I apply for sophomore/junior standing..? I am a first year here, however have sophomore status and I am "class of 2009" but again i'm just in my second semester, just taking a heavy courseload. and how heavy are the test scores taken into consideration?
Thanks!
cheers

i would say you have pretty good chances of getting into NYU and BU. If you are aiming for Harvard and Columbia, you have to retake your SAT reasoning test. If you can get an internship from JP Morgan, i am sure SAT will be a piece of cake for you now.

hey crillen - I actually do want to do that, however, I did not honestly have time to do it. during this break I was doing an internship in brussels and then I was in germany so there really was no way for me to retake the SAT...and I might write that into my application and offer them to have me retake them in march (because officially the march date is too late.., and thats the next test date). however do you have any advice whether I should apply for sophomore or junior standing and how heavy the test scores will weight at all?
cheers

Hi,Umass88... there are a lot of SAT test centers in Germany, so you can always retake that test while you are working as an intern there... you have a very good stats(except for the SATs)...so give it a shot, you have nothing to lose if applying to Harvard or Columbia as a sophomore....make sure you write a killer essay (WHY TRANSFER???) and get an excellent recommendation...good luck

anyone else with some advice?:)

come on guys, please!

Does NYU and BU have any sort of financial assistance for international transfer students?

If you transfer as a junior, the SAT is not so important as your college GPA.
And my suggestion is try your best to work on your why essay. :)btw, for harvard, they wont accept any transfer students in two years.and I think you could appy columbia even though you wont retake sat. It's worth to give it a shot.
I'm a bit confused about your"class of 2009".
And you take sat 2 German as a German student?thats um,pretty funny.

Best luck for you :D

Harvard doesn't accept transfers. You might want to broaden your list a bit.

Are you considering financial aid in your transfer app?

I would prob agree with the above. To the best of my knowledge, BU and NYU offer no fin aid/scholarships to intl students, and yes harvard will not be accepting transfers for at least the next two years
