International Student

Hey everyone my name is Yasmine I'm 17 years old and a student from germany right now. I'm currently getting my IB and I want to apply for university in the United States.

So here's the deal. My grades are good, above average but not outstanding. My extracurricular activities are great I am a cheerleader and a cheerleader coach, dancing etc..
My problem is that I didn't score so well on the SAT .. I got a 500 on Math a 450 on CR and 450 on Reading. The test was super hard for me as a non-native speaker . I did really well on my TOEFL scores though got a 106 out of 120 because the test was based on foreign language knowledge..

I wonder if I have chances to get into a good college. I don't want to go ivy league but I'm trying to have a shot at Vanderbilt or maybe Notre Dame. I know those are compettitive schools do you think I have a chance ?

I’m not really sure not knowing your exact grade and other awards and stuff, but
one thing I would recommend is raise your SAT scores. Def. DEF.
I do not want to disappoint you, but I’m gonna be honest cause I think that’s what’s gonna help you.

you got total of 1400, which is really low for those schools that you are applying for.
You got toefl scores so that might help, but not significantly.
Try getting high 700 in math at least. Memorize your vocab.
You have to raise your SAT score at least +600 for those schools, or I would say those SAT scores will really hold you back.
Right now I would say both far-out-reach.
If you raise your SAT to about 2000, I’d say high reach.
Hope that helps :)

Hey,

I am also an international student. The schools are pretty flexible concerning the CR and W score of the SAT for non native speaker. And you got a very good score on your TOEFL. Nevertheless, your scores seem quite low. I did lower than you on my TOEFL but I managed to have 780+ on math and 600+ on CR/W.
I am sure you can do better than that if you take the test again. It could be too late for Vanderbilt but some schools accept January test date.

If you have any other question, pm me!

Good luck!

A safety should be a test-optional school…

My daughter has a GPA around 3.9 out 4.0 which is top 5% in her high school. She also scored 2200 on SAT. She is a U.S. born citizen and a great writer. With that said, her chance of getting in a Top 10 (Ivy league plus) college is less than 2%. Her chance of getting in a Top 11 to Top 20 school is about 10 to 20%. In other words, if she applies to all the 10 colleges that are ranked 11 to 20, she may be able to get in to 1 or 2. For the top 20 to 30 schools, she then have a decent 20 to 30% chance. For the top 30 to 50, she has a good 30 to 50% chance. For those lower than T50, she should have a good 75% chance.

Before any of you jumped in and call me names, this is just my humble estimation. Although it is not baseless (I have data and records that I gathered), it is only a rough estimate. Frankly everyone is different and every college is different. For example: Ranking at 21, Georgetown ranks the same as UC Berkeley. But Georgetown, to my daughter, is much harder to get in (probably less than 10% chance). A major part of this is that the UCs tends to base their decisions on a “spreadsheet” while Georgetown’s approach is very different.

Since I don’t really know you, I can’t provide you with any good estimates. With that said, both Vandy and ND are in the top 20s, and many great students are applying for these. Do your best and have no regrets. Good luck!

thank you for taking the time to reply to my threat! well i know that my optional schools did not require the SAT at all for international students.
I also applied to LSU , UF , UTK , OLE MISS, USF , UH, to name some of the schools.
I will take the SAT again in january and I really hope I will score better ! I found this test extremely hard especially CR. The TOEFL test was really easy . I dont know if i have any chanches getting a better score maybe I just had a bad day

johny 245 how did you manage to do that

Well the math section was really easy, you don’t really need English skills to get a top score on this section.

For CR and W, I just practiced a lot… Buy the Mc Graw Hill’s or Barron’s SAT book and take 1 hour per day to study… And also, try to take a practice test every saturday morning.

To improve your CR score I suggest reading. Read good books as much as possible. You may also want to learn some core vocabulary.
For Writing and Math you need to practice, practice, practice.
