International students and JDs

I'm a good few years off now from being in a position of going to any kind of graduate education, but as a foreign student due to go to America for college this year, I was just idly wondering about law school, and whether or not international students can actually get JDs.

I think internationals do get JDs.. if Im not mistaken the president of taiwan got a JD from Harvard

President of Taiwan has an LLM from NYU Law and a JSD (or SJD) from HLS. His JD itself is from Taiwan.

hmm... intriguing. Anything more certain?

I don't think getting the JD would be the problem, especially if you went to a college with a similar style to American ones.

Sitting for the bar, however, could be a completely different story - but I don't know anything about that.

You can get a JD. You can pass the bar. The problem is getting a work visa to stay in the US if you want to work as an attorney here. Yes, it can be done, but not everyone who wants to do so can. Moreover, when you start law school, there is no way to predict how hard it will be to do so when you finish law school. It is easier for citizens of certain nations, e.g., Australia, than for others.

The US legal system is somewhat unique, so if you can't stay in the US, your employment options may be limited. Again, in some nations, there may be jobs available with a US J.D. and others, they may not exist.

good to hear, more just wondering than anything else.

It might not be difficult for a law firm to hire you and provide you with a position for a green card application if you are competitive enough. My common sense leads me to think that it might be the easiest thing for a law firm to do so...

hi every one, i am new here and i don't speak very well your launguage, but i would like to discuss(how much i can) about student life on different countries and learn new things about law. i study law and in itali, and if you have questions wich i can unswer i will be glad to write. im sorry for my grammar mistakes but i promise i will try to learn quickly. kisses kela
