International Students and their Financial Status

hey ,
I was wondering why this question always remains unanswered .

JHU is not needblind for international students. So how much effect will a financial aid packet have on the chances for admission for such a student. I mean , well there are obviously better candidates asking for financial aid than regular ones. Also although it is called need based aid .. it ain't actually .....

Well people who have really got merit only get the need based aid .. so it is sure a merit based aid..based .
I wonder how does this affect an applicants profile. Like Admission officers have always said they dont handle such issues , ,so who does that .i mean how are the two facts on admission profile and finaid needed taken together .

10% of international students receive aid each year , but then like what is expected of them , i mean generally they have higher stats but how much . There is a lot of confusion regarding this with many.

Also does increasing the amount one can pay for the college, also affect. I mean will putting 20000 instead of 10000 dollars a year affect the chances or not.

Please people, one request , answer this with a comprehensive knowledge. If u dont have info . ... dont comment coz ppl at CC are best known to answer vaguely and often wrong. do comment if u have true facts ..

smartmind, I hope that I will be able to provide you with the information you are seeking. First, let me make it clear I am commenting on how Hopkins evaluates international students (non-US citizens, non-permanent residents). Every school does it differently and you should make note of that fact.

Yes, international applicants who apply to Hopkins are reviewed by Admissions and Financial Aid on a need-aware system. The best way I can explain this and answer your questions, is to take you through a step-by-step approach of our review process for international applicants.

(1) An international student's application once complete is reviewed by the members of the Admissions Staff and a preliminary decision is rendered by the Admissions Committee. This decision will be based on the application materials alone and will have not be impacted by financial need or an applicant's ability to pay.

(2) If the preliminary decision is admit, then the next step is to review the International Student Certificate of Finances which is a required form for all international applicants. If the numbers add up and the student and family can contribute completely (and there is no financial aid application) then the admit decision will stand.

(3) If based on the International Student Certificate of Finances and/or an application for Financial Aid has been completed and processed, then the admission decision will be reviewed with financial need taken into account.

(4) Near the end of the decision making process, the international students with preliminary decisions of admit & financial need will be re-reviewed for consideration of aid. As you correctly stated in your post, about 10% of international students at Hopkins will receive financial aid. This is a process overseen by both Admissions and Financial Aid counselors to determine which group of international applicants should receive aid packages. As you can imagine this is a very competitive process and numerous factors are taken into account.

(5) Once this review of which international students will receive aid is complete, the preliminary decisions are now changed to final decisions. Those receiving aid packages will remain as admit, whereas those not able to be funded will not be offered admission. We are not able to grant admission to an international student who can not offered the cost of Hopkins - so if an international applicant who has financial need will not be supplied with the proper funds we are unable to admit.

I hope that explains it a bit better. Let me adress two of your other questions...

This aid is not merit-based in that the money comes from the financial aid process. However, since the process is competitive in selecting with international students will receive aid, the merits of ones application is definitely taken into account. So though it resembles the merit review process, this is still considered financial aid.

And no, increasing the amount one can pay does not have a substantial impact on whether one will receive aid. The decisions of which international students to offer aid is based on which of the applicants the Admissions committee most wants to attract to attend Hopkins.

This is a difficult process and I hope my information has shed some new light on how we do things at Hopkins.

Cheers!

Sorry if this off topic, but does hopkins have a reputed department in economics or business?

Admissiondaniel
I must thank you before all for the wealth of information you have given. I am ankur modi from India. Since the very days of application preparation , this question has bugged me, ,but now with this insight into what really goes on , ,the things have changed. International students are really at a big confusions , if they ask for finaid coz the procedures are not known . The information you have given will go a long way to change some minds.

I hope this quest of mine reaches the right destination.

I had another query regarding SAT scores. I wanted to know 2 things ::

Do you calculate any sort of an academic index or ranking scheme for applicants based on their statistics and scores only.

For any applicant desiring to major in engineering , do you weight the SAT2 more than sat1 ..like giving more importance to sat2 and sat1 Maths for them ... In my case for example, i have demonstrated my ability with high sat2 scores (2350/2400 in all science subjects) and sat1 maths (800) But then the other components of sat1 are weak , which doesn't show my ability. In fact i am not a gud test taker for the English tests. I though am not required to prove my English abilities for many reasons which include my journalism and best journalist award at the most respected national daily of India. ( u may not comment on these if it seems like me asking for chances, u may very well be general).

How will JHU see the writing component of the new sat.

Do you have any idea, how many Indians got in JHU with aid , and does that figure hold any consequence, or is irrelevant.

Hope you answer these...

KillerAngel, yes Johns Hopkins does have a strong Economics program. It is part of the Social Sciences at Hopkins which along with Political Science and International Relations are quite good. Learn more about the department here: <a href="http://www.econ.jhu.edu/undergraduate.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.econ.jhu.edu/undergraduate.html</a></p>

As far as Business at Hopkins, there is no Business major. However, we have a fantastic Entrepreneurship and Management program, also known as our Business minor. More info here: <a href="http://www.mts.jhu.edu/busminor/%5B/url%5D">http://www.mts.jhu.edu/busminor/</a></p>

Cheers!

Smartmind, let me try to answer your next set of questions...

No, we do not calculate academic indexes when reading applications. Since every applicant needs to be reviewed based on their own individual academic circumstances we evaluate in a much more holistic, and comprehensive way.

There is no rule on how standardized tests are reviewed. In some cases SAT I matter more than SAT II, and vice versa. In some cases little emphasis is placed on test scores, and in other cases they matter more. Once again the review is comprehensive and individual, we factor everything in, in every case.

The writing section is being evaluated very similar to the way we looked at the old SAT II Writing section in previous years (as that exam was required).

Irrelevant, and we do not track our statistics that way. Sorry.

Cheers.

If the preliminary decision is admit, then the next step is to review the International Student Certificate of Finances which is a required form for all international applicants. If the numbers add up and the student and family can contribute completely (and there is no financial aid application) then the admit decision will stand.

WHAT!!!? where can I find the form? I totally did not know about it. Is it too late now to submit? Do I have to even if I do not look for Financial Aid??? Thanks

This .pdf of the CollegeBoard "International Student Certification of Finances" can be found on the JHU website.

Yes, all International Applicants must submit the Certification of Finances. Thanks to mootmom for linking to the pdf.

MetheMan, if you are a non-US citizen, non-Permanent Resident then you must submit this complete form as soon as possible (no later than Jan. 15).

I thought the dead line is Feb 1 for COF. At least that is what the website says.

What is "Signed copies of parents’ and student most current income tax statements"?

<a href="http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/international.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/international.html</a></p>

do my parents just signe on the margin of the paper?

One more thing. What is a "benefit" statement of an employer?

"Copies of both parents' and student's tax statement"
Hmm, so if my mother and I don't make money, that means we don't have we don't have separate US Federal Tax Return form. What should I send then?

This is sad. I live in America, pay lots of tax to US gov't, speak English, but somehow on paper, I am an "alien". :(

Oh, is there a way for a student to appeal for reversal of the admission decision, ie from reject to accept? My green card is only few months away (most likely before I enroll at JHU but possibly after final decision at April 1).

We request the COF be sent as soon as possible so that we can begin processing the paperwork. The final deadline is Feb. 1.

Signed copies just mean that they are copies of the officially submitted income tax statements sent to the IRS.

If you and/or your mother did not submit tax return forms, then you only submit your father's statement.

Decision appeals will be reviewed, but are rarely overturned. The process is explained here: <a href="http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/rdfreshmen.html#rd_deny%5B/url%5D">http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/rdfreshmen.html#rd_deny</a></p>

Thanks a lot for the information again.
can i though fax my documents for financial aid to the JHU office.
By the way ,

I just thought i make this passing remark i made somewhere else also for your help is highly appreciated...

I had a poor sat verbal for my application and my language as such is not poor. I mean that standardised tests in languages are just not my cup of tea. the scores ( 600 CR ++ 620 writing) reflect this. I though have enough proof of my language efficiency in english even in my application . Like i am a Journalist at The Statesman, which is the oldest and among the most prestigious daily newspaper in India. I also won the 2004-05 Trophy for being the Best Journalist. Also with several awards that focus on my capabilities at Both National and international scale , and of course the essay, these have been demonstrated.

Don't comment on the chances, but as i just wanted to ask... do these kind of cases looked as example of poor test takers or does these factors not completely compensate for the aspect i mentioned. I mean its not that my other scores are bad too.. leaving my two writing components , i have a 3150/3200 in sat1 maths ++ 3 science sat2 subjects. But does wanting an engineering major and being an international with Financial aid requirements, directly correlating to a near perfect application with no fallacy.

1)Also i have another query, I had been in contact with one of the other admission officer through email and wanted to ask you too about this.
I have a resume as an extra addition to my application as it really isn't possible to list my major activity and involvement and awards ( all bigger than state level) there . This resume contains all information. apart from the resume there is another piece of optional arts material along with ( a creative writing piece , a poem ). But i have something really interesting to tell to JHU. I had been investigating upon a hacker for the last 1 year who was doing all sort of personal hacking in India( Calcutta). Last week , i exposed the hacker through a series of events and tracking evidence i collected through this 1 year. It was an amazing exposure and i wanted to tell the admission officers about the whole event of how it happend with the technical expertise, ,knowledge involved in exposing him . So what do i do , as i cannot include any more supplements ( already activity highlight and poem) . ? kindly advise ?

2)the last small but important question , i would ask is one that was asked to me by several existing members about research. How does JHU review any research information given or provided in the application or along with in a sheet . Is it taken as a supplement or reviewed by a seperate department.

I know , you have been helping me a lot and others here . But JHU is among the very top priorities on my list of colleges and these queries are ones that were left behind unanswered for a long time. Hope you will answer these too as yet another mark of novel gesture. Sorry for being too inquisitive, but i really want to get in.

If you want to fax your documents use the following #: 410-516-6025.

As far as your question about test scores, yes we do factor a student's background in when we evaluate standardized test scores. If English is not your first language, then the evaluation of test scores will for obvious reasons be different. Scores still matter, as they are one of the many factors that are reviewed with each application.

With regard to supplemental information, you may add to your application up until January 15, 2006. Everything needs to submitted in writing via the postal mail and include your full name and birth date so it can be matched with your application.

Any supplemental research is reviewed by the Admissions committee. Academic departments do not assist with admissions reviews, outside of the Woodrow Wilson fellowship selection, and Biomedical Engineering selection process.

Thank you. :)

I was thoroughly confused about the financial aid forms since the requirements are so vastly different for different schools (especially for international students).

Are Canadian students subject to the need-aware evaluation process?

Thank you once again for all what you have told me ...... this one post in itself has a plethora of information regarding several factors of admission for an international seeking aid at JHU

I always wondered, what the life of an admission officer would be like. Like do you see an applicant in every college goer and is life very weird or unique.I have seen you answer posts at all times of day and night, weekdays and weekends..

sometimes i do feel, how would it be like if an adcomm came in a party and the ppl shouted aloud, " hey listen ppl see there , he is the admission officer at JHU "

Just wondering, and yeah no questions......

SMARTMIND

BlissfulAngst, yes Canadian students are international students so they are treated as such.

AdmissionsDaniel, I got rejected from JHU this year and wanted to ask you 2 questions:

1.) Is there any way i can find out WHY i got rejected so that I can work on this ?

2.) I am applying ED w/financial aid (i am an international student). What is the admission rate for int. students asking for aid under the ED round?

I will be soo sooo grateful if you could answer these questions.

AdmissionsDaniel could you please answer my questions...
