International Students and their Financial Status

1) No. We do not comment on admissions decisions as there are many factors that go into why we make the decisions we make.

2) No international students who apply ED who also apply for financial aid will be admitted ED. We defer all those decisions to the RD round.

Hi everyone! This is the first time I've been on the JH forum. Since I'm an international student (a junior) who would need financial aid to be able to attend JH, I've found this thread to be extremely useful.

AdmissionsDaniel, I'm really glad you are taking the time to give students reliable information about JH!! If it's not too much trouble, could you please answer a question for me?

In an earlier reply to Smartmind, you said: "As far as your question about test scores, yes we do factor a student's background in when we evaluate standardized test scores. If English is not your first language, then the evaluation of test scores will for obvious reasons be different."

What I would like to know is do you expect international students to score better on the Math portion than on the Writing/CR section of the SAT. I scored above 700 on all the sections of the SAT (and on the SAT Subject Tests) but my lowest score was math.

I am thinking about applying to JH, but I'm more interested in the humanities/social sciences than in math/science. Most of my ECs are related to English and the humanities, and one of the AP exams I took last year was AP English. However, I took some science APs this year and I am planning on taking AP Calculus in my senior year.

I just realized that I'd like to ask you two more questions. Here they are:

Is harder for international students to get into JH with an interest in the humanities than with an interest in math/science/engineering.

Is JH good at preparing students for law school or for graduate programs in the social sciences/humanities?

Well, that's all I would like to ask for now. AdmissionsDaniel, if you can answer my questions or give me any relevant information I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

First your question about test scores. We do not have pre-set expectations for test scores based on your international status or your academic interests. My response earlier was that when reviewing test scores we factor in each student's "history" -- whether English is a second language, whether their interests lie in math/science or english/history, what kind of schooling have they had, etc. Simply put, test scores are not reviewed solely based on the numbers, but rather how those numbers relate to the individual student.

Second, there is a huge misconception about Hopkins that because we have very strong science/math fields that our expectations are that all applicants need to be exceptionally strong in those areas. Not true -- Hopkins is a liberal arts institution with as strong of fields in the humanities and socials sciences as the fields of engineering and natural sciences. We review each applicant based on their stated areas of interest, and will review their academic experiences based on their future academic plans.

Admissibility does not relate to academic interest - it is not harder to get in to JHU for one major over the next. This holds true for international students too. It is hard to get into JHU overall, not because of a specific academic area of interest.

Yes, our pre-law program is quite strong. Two years ago the law school acceptance rate was 100%, last year it was 93%.
