International Students - Any Admissions Advantages?

When do international students apply to Colleges, especially when their school year begins in Jan not Sep as well as ends in Dec not Jun?

i dunno about you australian (i’m guessing?) folks but people here in singapore apply with predicted grades for A levels. they just apply between oct-dec using their predicted grades and send in their actual results when they’re released.

I’ve seen people rejected from MIT with 2300 SAT and IMO bronze medal. I’m confused…

It’s not how high your grades are. There’s virtually no ‘cut off point’ at all - some 1700s get accepted while I know someone who got 2380 and got rejected. It’s a combination of all your talents, you extracurriculars, essays, recommendations, and your grades that determine your acceptance.

And yes, I’m singaporean and applied in november to Berkeley. After I got accepted I just sent in my A level grades since they were out. It’s pretty straightforward.

@ IBAustralia:
you would apply after ur VCE/HSC exams in November. So if you finish in November 2010, you would apply for the class entering in Fall 2011.

This is somewhat of a good timeline to follow if you are in year 12 this year:
July - September: Get your SATs out of the way, Find suitable teachers for evaluations, and alert officials about necessary transcrips etc. (basically get your act together and start collecting necessary data); email interested colleges and also remind them that since you are Australian, you can provide ur FINAL scores but they might be a little late (they wont mind as long as you remind them)
October/November: Start looking at the application essays and brainstorming ideas; Apply for interviews (MIT); Make a profile of yourself - what you want to be portrayed as in ur application etc; remind your teachers abt evaluations etc; WORK HARD FOR YOUR END OF YEAR EXAMS
December: begin essays (this is the main task for the month) but also make sure all your recommendations and evaluations are being complete; ensure high school transcripts are ready to be sent; just make sure everything is going smoothly; AS SOON AS YOUR ENTER SCORE ARRIVES, HAVE IT INCORPORATED IN YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS(obv if its bad, then don’t) AND SEND COPIES TO YOUR INTERESTED UNIs.

agree with Eloriel…and just want to add that Passion is a key attribute in that list

also, IBAustralia, do not forget about Berkeley’s applications being due in November, because I did…haha not that it matter to me now
