International students queries

Hey there,

I'm currently a freshman at NYU, and it has really been an amazing year for me. You guys are in for a very unique experience that kids at other universities can only dream about.

Anyway, I'm an international student, and I must say that getting here was the hardest part, especially with NYU's inefficient administration. So feel free to post any questions regarding visa, paperwork, schoolwork, social life . My finals are coming up, but I'll do my best to help you guys any way I can.

how hard is it for an international student to find an internship in their first year of undergrad at stern?

It really varies. Some kids don't do any internships at all during freshman year.

As for me, I'm finishing up my freshman year in Stern, and I did one internship this semester, I was offerred another one which I rejected. For the summer, I was offerred 4, 2 of them in New York and another 2 in international locations. Of couse, my situation might not be the norm for most international students.

But overall, getting an internship as an international is definitely not impossible.

what? is it harder for ints. then?

also, can u elaborate more about international internships? i think it would be pretty cool to go to another city during the summer for an internship.

And ya, how's the social life at stern? is it all about bars/clubs and other stuff in the city, or do ppl hang out in the dorms too?

can you elaborate more about your internships specifically? what company? hours? pay?

IVY,

Yes and no.

Basically during your first academic year, you are not allowed to take on paid internships. Once your second semester ends, you can apply for this thing called OPT which will allows you a period of a total of 1 year to do full-time work(40 hours per week). Part-time work (20 hours or less) will considered for half the amont of time, meaning technically you could do a total of 2 years worth of internship part-time.

So these paperworks aside, I do not believe that internationals are at a disadvantage. You have international experience, and I'm also assuming some knowledge of languages beside English (I myself know 3, and I think that definitely helped).

My internship during the semester was unpaid, but I really didin't care since it was more important to get some experience and to put something on your resume - It's all about leveraging yourself for the future.

The thing about internships is that the onus is on you to look for them, especially international internships. Those who expect internships to fall on their laps will never get any. Anyway, it would be hard to generalise international internships, you have to let me know specifically what country you're looking at.

Hope this helped.

IVY again,

It's hard to sum up social life at Stern, but I would say that almost everyone parties and hangs out at clubs, and yes people do hang out at dorms a lot. No worries, you won't miss out on a social life just 'cos you're in Stern, at least not during freshman year.

At the same time, what I love most about Stern is the activities they line up for us sometimes. On monday, I got the chance to watch a John Williams (Composer for soundtracks like Jurassic Park, ET, Schindler's List, Star Wars) concert. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg hosted the event and it was really awesome. Other times there are dinners at top notch restaurants with alumni, and these are really cool as well.

dylin,

I can't go into specifics, but I won't be ashamed to say that I started out at small and relatively unknown companies. Everyone has to start somewhere and I wasn't fortunate enough to have connections to somebody high up in the major banks or firms.

For pay, generally you can expect something as low as $7 and as high as $15 as a freshman. I know some people who get paid as much as $25 per hour, but that's rare.

The summer internship I might be doing is a Finance position at a major car company, and probably won't pay very much, just enough to cover the basics. But what I'm looking for is experience and the prestige of the company's name on my resume, and I really don't expect much more as a freshman.

small world
IVY that's my roommate you are talking to, im your friend from calgary btw

Hey :) Thanks for this.

I'm planning on saving my OTP year for after I graduate, so I want to work on campus during my time at NYU. Did you work on campus? or do you know how easy it is to do so/what jobs available?

Also, on the student visa you are able to go home and come back during the holidays, right?

Anddd finally, did you get homesick at all? and if you did, did it really bother you?

ill answer that

you don't have to save all of your OPT for graduation. The OISS suggests saving 5 months, some studetns don't even save it. The majority of Stern students get job offers before they graduate anyway.

Neither I nor ath worked on campus, but there are lots of jobs available and they are pretty easy to get. However, oncampus jobs pay miniscule amount of money so you have to think about whether it is worth ur time.

Yes you could go home and come back with ur student visa and sometimes you get home sick but it didn't really bother me cauz i call home alot (kind of a mandatory rule set by my parents)

So........... with the proper paperwork internships for intl. students should be fine. By paperwork, you mean a proper working visa and such (Crap that I know very little about, but don't bother explaining the details of them......... unless u want to). So I was wondering when would you have to apply for the type of visa that allows you to work? Also, If I wanna work during freshman year, would I have to apply now? Plus can the money go towards tuition?

Also, you said students get internships during their fresmen year (Which is pretty quick, even before the summer?!), so when do people Usually start looking for internships? THis is also kinda shocking not only because of how quick that is, but also because I can't see anyone who has merely completely a semester of school (Or maybe not even) having any qualifications at all (Other than the fact that they're qualified enough to get into Stern.... which puts them at them at more or less the same "level" as me Riiiight Noooow since i've taken fancy courses that are apparently equivalent to first year uni ones... oh and i've been accepted into Stern).

Where do you go or what do you during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Thanksgiving breaks?
I mean, don't you have to get out from your dorm or something like that?

Although I am not an international student, my parents will be moving to somewhere in Africa right after my high school graduation to have a "purpose" in their lives... so I won't have my home to go back....

custum :when you work u still hold on to ur student visa. you apply for something called the OPT which is only required for PAID employment or internships. For non paid, you don't need any special documents.
Also getting a internship in ur freshmen year isn't too hard if you try. They don't give you anything important anyway so just go and learn as much as u can, make friends, get something to put on your resume. However, a lot of my friends only start applying towards the end. Just enjoy the first semester, there's no rush anyway. My friend applied for her summer internship late april/early may and she still got it.

merumerume: i went home for winter and summer, most people (even internationals) do anyway, unless you found a job or something. The dorms pretty much empties out on thanksgiving, so you can either spend it by yourself, with the people who stayed behind, check out the parade, or go home with your friends. Spring break is about the same, but you could take a trip to some where like puerto rico or boston like i did, you dont need a visa for that.

Thanks chezo
