International Students Quota

Hi! I have a question concerning admission for international students. As I understand, Dartmouth is both need-based and need-blind for international students - that is, it does not consider international student's ability to pay tuition as an admission factor and promises to meet any of its admitted student's financial need.

Yet, from what I heard, schools that are both need-blind and need-based for international students usually have a quota for international students- that is, each year, they can only accept a fixed and limited amount of international students. MIT, For example, can only accept about 100 international students every year. So, my question is - is that also the case with Dartmouth? Does Dartmouth have a quota for international students?

I have the same question!
Also, other stats aside, are there certain types of international students (besides URMs) that enjoy a slight advantage in comparison to, say, Asian students?
For example, I’m an Australian student, and I wonder if that might hurt me or help me…slightly.

I can’t answer your question directly, but I can point you to some data. See page 5 of this document.
This Page Has Moved;
(Unfortunately the numbers for Australian applicants are not broken out.)

Keep in mind that this data is for applicants and matriculants, not admitted students. 90 matriculated in the class of 2014, but how many were admitted? I’m not aware of any published yield number for international students.

No top American university can exist without some unofficial target quota for international applicants. Testimony to that is the consistent numbers admitted year to year. This is especially relevant given the rise in popularity of top “name” US colleges in the eyes of more and more international students.

@T26E4, Well, I was not talking about an unofficial quota, I was rather asking about a real official one. MIT had an OFFICIAL quota for international students. As a matter of fact, this is the only quota they officially have. My question therefore is, does Dartmouth has an official quota and, if so, what will be the number of international students Dartmouth can accept ever year.

I’m aware of MIT’s. Know of no Ivies that post that number, though. A good guess will be to trawl through previous years admit stats and see what the target number seems to be.

Can you ask admissions directly?

If they haven’t published one previously they aren’t going to give out a number now. They keep rough numbers in their mind and adjust according year to year.

Beyond curiosity, your quest for this number is futile. Plus, will it affect your application? Nope.
