Vanillaice>> You're applying after your O levels? No offense, but I think it'll be quite tough considering you'll be only Grade 10 in American standards. Plus, only very few universities will accept students who apply after their Os, and then again, if you require fin aid, your chances will be even slimmer. A friends applied to Columbia, Stanford and Notre Dame after his O levels and he only got accepted to ND, w/o fin aid, purportedly because he hadn't done his A levels yet. Go read up about the conditions on each college's website first.. 15 colleges IS alot of money, you might want to think it over. Yup, just giving my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

i mean not to sound arrogant or anything...i think i've done my homework pretty well and it doesn't seem to me dat applying directly after o levels is dat disadvantageous. as long as ur good enough, i think u can give it a try. besides i still can stay in singapore if i can't get in, with scholarship as well...but i'll have to pay a lot if i terminate next yr when i get my replies from colleges around may. huh?? y would rjc limit u??datz a bit unfair u know...is it because ur a scholar? oh dat was to wmgan...and only 8 colleges!! o gosh....must get into one dis time!!!

hey!
This is the REAL gandalf. That was mom.Dunno how she got in.... anyway...what I really wanted to know was how important my score will be in my admission. I have heard that there are hooks... williams has a top score of 1510 (correct me if i am wrong). Will my score be a hook?

My profile:

Tests - SAT I - 1600
Toefl - range is 243-300 (williams doesn't care for toefl scores I suppose)
I still have to take my SAT II (started taking tests a bit late)

Academics - I have % of about 90 and rank 1 in a class of 238
I have a few merit certificates in national olympiads

ECs - Not much to boast of... I do have a lot of interests but don't any spectacular prizes to show-off.

I read a lot (does that count as a extracurricular?)
I have a green belt in Taekwondo
Learnt Indian classical vocal for about two years
community work - 15 days- cancer awareness
Colection of donations for the destitute
I play Table Tennis and chess quite well - have represented my school at the regional level once in TT. Am going to do the same in chess in a couple of weeks
I play many other sports - basketball, football, cricket .etc. , and have won prizes at the community level, though I don't think that wil matter - never got the opportunity to play for the school in these.

Have got a couple of essay writing and quiz awards at the intramural level
Have a couple of prizes for science fairs.

I don't have any work experience- will that matter?

Vanillaice>> Yup well I guess if you're confident of yourself then you could give it a shot! All the best in your apps and stuff. Just remember to mug extra hard for the O levels too aight. An impressive O level cert might just help you. Oh, and as to the limit of schools- I'm from RJC too- I think it's good actually, it helps reduce the no. of people from our school applying to all sorts of places at any one time cos they may deprive others of spots in that particular university. Well, that's what the guidance counsellor told us anyways. Haha.

vanillaice>> muz mug hard for 'O's!
supergirl>> rj? really? i'm from rj too, what class r u from? i'm in 2s01a, "da scholars class", heh. good? hmm, i disagree. i'm only applying to 7, but i really think if someone wants to apply to 15 uni, the school shdn't limit him. and anyway, admission officers always say that they don't have quota for the number of students they get from a particular school rite?
gandalf>> top score of 1510? what's a "top score"? i think 1510 is the 75th percentile or something like that. i'm very sure that there're lots of people out there with 1600s applying to williams just like you. so, personally, i don't think your SAT scores alone will do the work. you need great essays and recommendations. quite expected eh? btw, i'm applying to williams also. i NEED the financial aid. so sad it doesn't have math-econs major (it only has math AND econs but not the combination), but i think i'll put econs as my prospective major. the best thing about williams: its party scene is amazing! heh.

The adcom won't ever admit to having a quota, but face it - if you were an adm officer in a US uni, would you want to flood the place with applicants from a single country, much less a single school?

I do think the limit of 8 unis is excessively restrictive, but I can understand why the school insists on it. Sigh.

thankx e1dj86 for shattering my strongest hope...well, maybe its best. atleast I know what I am in for

i just got mine,
Writing 650
Math IIC 800
Physics 790

I guess i'll be retaking writing in December, and maybe i'll even take chem

awesome! g'luck for dec

yo Astrix, (the right guy for the job) any tips for
Nov Verbal
Dec Writing

Hehe... I really dunno man. For verbal there's this nice thread [thread=2453]here[/thread]. Can't say about writing

I'm sad now... 610 M, 620 V. :(

Right now I'm rethinking even applying at all. Kind of stupid with those scores.

Blah...

ria, there's still time to retake. I'm sure you can do better. What is the rest of your profile like? It's better to have a great academic record and EC's rather than great SAT's. (arguable, but that's how I feel)

GPA is around 19.5 out of 20.0, pretty good EC's (leadership and research). I don't know what to do about the math, I'm usually very good at math. I've done the tests in the 10 Real SAT's book and get math scores aroung 700-740. I just don't know what happened, that's why it's so strange. I followed the post about the oct SATs on the test board and felt good. My answers were correct, it seemed. And now, it's a 610. :(

I got 1390, 770V and 620M. I am prouder of my math score than I am of my verbal score (although, I LOVE my verbal score), ironically. It took so much work for me to get my math score over 600, and I am SO glad I finally did it. I'm not bad at math - I just need time to analyze a problem before I can solve it correctly, and when I'm rushed, I tend to make a lot of stupid mistakes.

julzy88, congratz for ur score. hmm... i suppose ur verbal score is among the highest in this thread (since all of us are "International Students", heh.)

Thanks. :)

ria - I think I kinda understand what you are going through. My girlfriend who has been a straight A student all her life (and admittedly a better student than I'll ever be), got a 1260 on the Oct SAT (610V, 650M). She used to average sth like 750+ on the Math and 680+ on the Verbal in 10 Real. But hey, I agree with Astrix, there is still a lot of time and you definitely should resit (like my GF will be doing in Dec).

Trust me, you'll do better. Good luck.

mellowjello - thank you. I guess I should re-take in dec.... I just don't know if it's worth it.
