International Students

Hi everyone. i'm new here. are there any students from abroad who have applied/been accepted ea to Yale? i'm from a mixture of France and the UK, and can't wait to meet you all at Yale in April.

Hey, im new too and im also international. I've lived in mexico most of my life but i was born in brasil and my parents are american so i definitely understand the whole coming from an intl background thing....i found out yesterday i got in but im having a tough time deciding where to go..where else did you apply or get in? are you nervous about living in the US? i know i am!

I'm an Intl future-to-be-Yalie too, from Kiev/Ukraine. excited to meet you ppl there)) LOVE YALE!!!! Meet you in April)

im a US citizen and have family in the US but have never lived there. I applied to Yale EA and Oxford, got into both and decided about a month ago to opt for the former. I am a little nervous about living in the US but I have been going to boarding school for the last seven years, so it may not be as much of a shock as for others.

hey, im from the UK but unlike you guys i got rejected by Yale and Harvard but im not too bothered as it was just a dream. I put most of my efforts into the UK thing and was accepted at Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Nottingham, Durham. So im off to Cam if i get the grades!!! Have a great time at Yale, i visited and thought it was cool, im sure ill do some grad stuff in the states, prob ivy league

hey trachea, i go to the british school in mexico city so i have a lot of friends applying to some of the same schools in the UK...cambridge...that is impressive!! congratulations on getting in, a friend of mine got rejected and he's pretty much a genius so you must be really amazing haha...where in england do you live anyway? and to the other intl students if i end up at yale i cant wait to meet you, maybe we'll all join the intl student organisation...

i live in salisbury (known for its cathedral and stonehenge) in wiltshire, southern england. What sort of schools in the uk did your friends apply to, the one who applied to cam, which college and course did he apply for? So the ppl at your school are they british and have parents working in mexico, whats the deal?

they applied all over the place, the ucas system makes it nice and easy....umm, bath, lse, cambridge, i cant remember the names but pretty much all over the country...my friend applied for land economy at cam, and only 2-4 get in every year for that...well my school is the british school (called greengates actually) and it's where a lot of the foreigners go to school. We have the IB and IGCSE and most of my teachers are British but it's really an intl school (we have over 50 different nationalities) so most kids whose parents work for embassies or big multinational corporations go there. I'm in love with my school haha :) what about your school? what made you apply to schools in the US?

i applied just as it was an ambition, no pupil from my school as ever gone to the US for undergraduate degree. I knew i was at the oxbridge level and so its equivalent was ivy league. I only did harvard and yale because they offer enough fin aid as my family doesnt have too much money.

An exchange for a level spanish students took place at our school and it was with a school called lord byron from arequipa in peru, do you know it? one guy i met was going to uni in mexico and i was wondering where do you think he went, he was clever and mathematical and wanted to do computer science. So wheres the best for this in mexico

hmm dont know that school in peru...but your friend could have gone to the tecnologico de monterrey, the anahuac, the UNAM, the itam, the iberoamericana...any of those ring a bell? what are you studying at cam?

studying economics, i cant really remember which uni he said but thanks anyways as ill note them down and ask some friends.

alright...so are you going to be doing IB's or A levels anytime soon?

my a level exams start in 6 weeks!!!!!! Its ok though as Ive already completed most of the modules and need fairly poor marks this summer to get my three As to get me to the hallowed grounds of Cambridge.

To elberet24: Hey, Nataliya! First, WELCOME TO YALE!!
It is always super cool to see people from eastern europe. Especially from the former USSR (well, ok, you have revolution there, and are west -oriented, but see i mean just geographical and russian-speaking aspect:)) I am currently a freshman at YALE and I am from Russia. The point of my message -- as i understand you are coming to Bulldog days (quite unusual for internationla people, so you are lucky to afford that:) !! - tell me whether you want to meet with the russian/ukranian people here......Also, I think we can organize your stay with any of us ...if you want. They sort of have that option for Bulldogs days. Hm...i am not sure, though. Anyway - enjoy you flight here, and once again - WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Congrats. Also, if you think i might be helpful with any specific questions you (or, of course, any other international student here) have - i'll be happy to answer.
Cheers

manyzhka,

THANK YOU so much for your post!!! I am very happy to see a kindred spirit here (I assume we can call Ukrainian and Russian kindred spirits:).
And I would REALLY REALLY like to meet all the Ukrainian/Russian people during the Bulldog days...And staying with you would just be wonderful! I would truly appreciate that:) Thank you very much for offering... Oh, and overall, Thanks for being so welcoming!:) That's really a trademark of Russian and Eastern European people..)) I look forward to meeting you soon on campus, if possible))! And would really appreaciate if we could arrange a meeting with some of the other Ukrainian/Russian students there...
Thanks again!
See you soon hopefully!)

hi manyzhka...like elberet i just wanted to say thanks for being so welcoming!! as an intl student as well, i was wondering if you had any reasons why i should definitely choose yale over harvard? haha, i know, it's a weird question but i'm having a tough time deciding although i really am leaning towards yale...well, i guess what i'm asking is what are your favourite things about yale? what dont you like? is there a strong intl presence?

and trachea....my IB's start in less than a month so i am freakkkinngggg out!!! what do you take for A level?

You are all totally welcome:)!!

To elberet: Natasha, remeber you wrote an e-mail to Sasha? He told me about you today. He'll give you my e-mail and we'll see how we can arrange the bulldogs day stay. (Oh - just one more bit of fun info: there is since recently a Slavic Society at Yale. And...there is a group on the facebook called "born i the USSR - the coolest thing ever:)) You will be able to join it after you get your yale e-mail.)

To Chilanga: That's a tough question, indeed. Well, first of all - i know nothing about Harvard (except that they won the last "THE game" but that's off topic:) ). So my only comparison can be from what i heard from people. So, what I heard was always that yale is better:) They say that Harvard is MUCH less sociable and in the evenings campus is dead. Well, in all honestly, i am not a party-person, so the party aspect is not very relevant to me. On the other hand, it if fun seeing people having fun:) So basically - yalies work a lot but they can relax as well. As for the international community - there are SO MANY international people from wherever you can imagine. The presence is definitely strong. Example: my small hard econ ntro class : out of app. 20 people in the section - there are AT LEAST 10 international. Including the professor - ha-ha - the coolest professor ever!! He is leaving next year, though:(
What I like about Yale? Well, let me first say that the only thing i don't like is the fact that my parents are not here. But that would be the same anywhere. Be prepared to miss home a lot if you are a very family-type person. Now, the cool things. What I like is that though there are toms of international people, they are not segregated at all. Everyone has both international and amercian friends. And becuase american yalies are really cool - they are ready to talk to you about your country for ages ( my last discussion - role of the USSR vs USA in the WWII - oh dear, how wierd that is:)) Professors are also fascinated that you are from another country and in small classes would point at that and ask relevant to the topic questions. Hm....oh Yale Model UN team is the world's best (read : yes, yes better than Harvard's - or at least that's what I heard) - and generally the YIRA (check the web-site) is a great thing.
What else? Well, I heard that the psychological pressure is weaker than at Harvard. Though Yale's academics are competitive, people are usually supportive rather than competitive. The instances of someone saying : I am smater than you and you are stupid, are rare - i am yet to hear one, actually.

I love the fact that undergrads can study and eat at the grad schools. Law school dining hall and library - are the best places in the world. The libraries are fantastic ( but don't go there too frequently if you feel depressed when you see all these books that you want to read but have absolutely no time for that).

Also, I would pay attention to the residential colleges system. It is really worth what you generally hear about it. And i would say it is particularly important for the undergrad.

Then, I would consider your academic interests. What do you want ot major in? What specific programs at Yale might be attractive? What would harvard offer as similar options?

I don't even know what else to say. Can you try some more specific questions? Might help.

Don't stress out too much about the choice. You will be fine at both. But genarally, from what people say, you would be just happier at yale. People are cheerful and happy. That's about it:) There is no feeling of depression or any stress on campus. Quite on the contrary.

So I would choose Yale because it seems to be a more cheerful place. Bu tthen again - i have never been at Harvard and I have no clue about your personal preferences.

P.S. I apologize for all the grammar and spelling mistakes. I am pretty sure that my message hardly makes any grammatical sense, but it is 1 am and i am deadly asleep. I just got back from my Multivariable calculus midterm....................................... Oh, well...

manyzhka ,
Thank you so much! I'm really excited to meet you all there! And I'm def in the Slavic + USSR societies!!!:) Waiting for the e-mail...

manyzhka, thank you soo much!! I can't believe you put that much effort into answering my question at 1 am!! and please tell me your exam didnt keep you out that late...haha...i really appreciate you writing back and your answers are definitely pushing me towards yale, so you did a good job!! Is there anything you dont like about yale? anything at all? i figure i should get both sides...i cant make it up for bulldog days but i might be up there next week to visit...if so, could i maybe meet you? or if you have any cool classes or activities maybe i could tag along? haha...i know having a senior at your heels doesn't quite fit the description of a fun time but i'm not so fussy, promise :) anything neat going on on campus this week? speakers or anything cool you've done recently?
