I’m not sure if I put it in the wrong spot, but here we go!
What would be the best place to go to university for International Studies? In state and out of state, but if I went out of state, it would be way expensive for me. I currently live in Texas and I’m a junior in high school. What sort of classes am I supposed to take? I want to be able to study abroad. I’m not sure what language I’d want to learn yet, maybe Chinese or Japanese. I want my focus to be on East Asia or Asia if possible. Also, one more thing, I’ve been thinking about Texas State University and for International Studies, it has an Asian studies focus, International studies focus, and International Relations focus. What is the difference between those?
Hi, I also live in Texas and I am trying to get into the International Relations and Global Studies major at UT. The different focuses that Texas State offers is just to guide you in a direction since the major is so broad. Definitely stay in state because it will be hard to get a good job out of undergraduate school, you have to go on to graduate, and debt is never a good thing. Plus, Texas offers many scholarships and area specific grants if you look into it. Ask your counselor or do a google search of scholarships in your city or school district.
You can go anywhere and major in international studies - there are lots of good places with international studies majors, and you don’t have to try to pick a school that “specializes” in it. Most of your classes actually won’t be in your major, and there’s a lot about college that happens outside of academics as well - so there are lots of other characteristics to select on.
UT-Austin offers 33 different languages, including both Chinese and Japanese. Texas A&M offers 7 languages including Chinese and Japanese. Texas State offers 7 languages including Japanese. Many of the other Texas public universities offer Chinese and/or Japanese as well.
Hey sorry to bother you again, but is International Studies major liberal arts or interdisciplinary? Also, What is IS like? Is it too political? I want to be able to explore more about the cultural side, or something that’s not too political.
