International Studies / social scene?

Hey i was wondering how the IR or IS department is, i know it's one of the best in the nation, but it would help if someone could give me more insider details!
AND how's the social scene there? i know the stereotype is that students at JHU have no lives outside of school .. so can anyone tell me the real side of the story?
Thanks!

The listing of courses is one of the most extensive I've seen:

I'm sure there's a bazillion and one threads about "social life" at Hopkins. I think it's fair to say, though, that if you expect to come here, ace your classes while partying 5 nights a week...it probably won't happen- no matter what major you are.

i had an overnight at jhu on friday night and my host told me that the only 2 places where hopkins kids hang out are the library (open 24 hours) and PJ's pub.

That's a pretty limited opinion, most likely given by a first or second year - jhu kids hang out at lots of places and the longer you stay at JHU the more you discover other places. Particularly if you're 21... the city is your oyster...

yeah. the idea that hopkins kids don't go out at all don't go here, or don't try at all. i mean, in high school i didn't really go out much. i'd hang out with friends but i didn't particularily party much. not the story here. every weekend, you can go to frat parties or more private house parties when you meet upperclassmen. any weekday, you can go to the den (which is a club a few blocks off campus). you can go down to the harbor and go to a club there, you can go to pj's if they don't card or you have a fake id. i mean, there's no shortage of fun things to do here and if you space out your schoolwork, you won't have any trouble at all having free time to go out. yeah, some kids here don't go out. i would say the vast majority do. i mean, i've been to the library once since i've been here for a half hour, and that was to meet up for a group project. i get my stuff done, i get the grades, and i have a good time. it's possible, honest.

"yeah, some kids here don't go out. i would say the vast majority do."

I would disagree.
