Hi everyone! I am a high school junior and recently have been on some college visits. The tours have helped me narrow down what I really want to study in college. For the longest time I wanted to go into neuroscience/psychology or anthropology, but I feel attracted toward some other majors, and I wanted to see if anyone could help me.
I’m having trouble between these majors because they all rotate around interests of mine. I’ve narrowed my choices down to international studies, political science, and neuroscience. What are the career outlooks for grads in these fields? What all could I possibly do with any of these degrees? What does international studies entail? Political science? Neuroscience? I’m just having trouble picturing which subject I would benefit from the most. Thanks to anyone who can help me!
You’re a junior in high school - slow down. You don’t have to make any choices right now. I thought I wanted to major in neuroscience & biology in junior year; then I changed it to political science; and then sociology; and I actually majored in psychology.
The way that you narrow down your majors in college is by taking a few classes in your freshman and sophomore years and seeing what clicks with you. You take the introductory class in the major sequence, and decide: do you like it? Can you see yourself studying this for 4 years? What are your career goals, and do you need a specific major for them?
There are lots of things you can do with any of those majors; it just all kinds of depends on your preferences and what kinds of skills you pick up in college. One way to see what the majors entail is to pick a college you might like to attend and look through the college bulletin/catalog; see what the major requirements are for each major and what kinds of classes you might have to take.
