International Studies

Anyone have any ideas on how the International Studies are like at UW? Are the professors passionate about their classes? Are the classes huge? Thanks.

SIS classes are hit or miss depending on your T.A. , get ready for subjective grading. I have taken two SIS classes, one about Isreal got a 2.8, the other was SIS 201, and I got a 3.5. My essay’s were exactly the same quality.

oh, no. Now I’m nervous.

At the risk of sounding a bit oblivious, what exactly is International Studies all about? Yes, I know it enhances a global perspective and all that but one of my friends told me it was an “abstract major” and I’m not really sure what he meant. I love learning about other cultures and parts of the world so I thought this would be an interesting major to pursue, but what exactly can you do with it? (I’m going to be pre-med, but medical schools don’t really look at majors as long as you do well with the pre-reqs right?) Thanks! :)

Yeah, that’s why I’m pursuing it. I also like learning about cultures. It doesn’t really have a direct occupation like engineering and business, but other majors like English also don’t have a direct occupation either. I’m thinking that gov. agencies or companies that need a “foreign ambassador” of some sort would hire, not completely sure, though.
