International Transfer: High SATs/TOEFL, Low GPA.

Hello everyone,

I already posted this on the International Board, however, I believe that this might be the best place for this.

Before I say my academic credentials, I would like to point out that I come from a different background, hence my need to post this.
I have worked since I was 12 years old. Even during college, I only stopped working for 3 semesters total. My father is a doctor, but he doesn't make a lot of money (brazilian doctors don't). My mother works at a store. I don't need any financial aid because my grandfather is paying for my tuition, room and board.

The Good: My TOEFL score is 113 and my SAT I is 1470/1600 (680CR + 790Math) or 2010/2400.

The Bad: I'm currently attending the best Brazilian Economics University, however, because of my first year in college my GPA is low. It is currently 2.4. Why? As I have stated before, I have worked since I was 12. I got into college and simply didn't give even 10% of myself, started missing classes, didn't go to tests, etc. I went directly to work and back home to read myself to sleep.

I am enrolled in a community college for this first semester in New York, and I wanted to transfer by mid-year for the fall semester. I will manage to get As in all my courses, even if I have to study 12 hours a day.

I know that I have no chance at all trying to any top 50 schools, however, I was wondering whether I had any chance at getting into 2nd/3rd tier schools. For instance: University of Mississippi, University of Montana, University of Nebraska, Chicago State University, Ohio State University, etc.

Could you help me out, giving me some feedback on my chances?

Best,
Eduardo.

In a personal e-mail to the rep at UNL (Nebraska Lincoln) She stated that as long as you meet the minimum requirements, 2.0 GPA, you will most likely be accepted. The only thing is I was coming from a 4 year private. They don't have much diversity out there so that might get you in as well. So, I think that you will be able to get into some universities that are not exactly stellar but you will receive a good education if you go to class and attend test and participate in everything that the University has to offer. As for some of the other universities you have listed..... I live in Chicago and around here the Chicago State University does not have a very good reputation. I caution you. Its not very....diverse and you may feel out of place. The other schools, especially UNL and Ole Miss, I have heard great things about. You can get a good education without killing yourself studying. I don't think you would get into Ohio State seeing as how they have specific course requirements and a selective admissions, I think. So other schools you may want to look into are..... any school that is a non flagship state university (there are exceptions) if you have no issue with money look at some of the less competitive privates in NY if you like it there. Good Luck.
