International Undergrad admission for Engineering

Hi, I found this site to be very useful. But i needed some pointers from you guys about my particular case.

My info:-

Completed 3 years in graduation in india.
Subjects:- Bachelor of science in Electronics.
2 years with Mathematics(calculus with single multiple variables, vectos, etc)
3 Years with electronics (C programming, Matlab, VHDL,Pspice, Assembly Language 8051,analogue electronics, Integrated circuits)
One Final Year Project completed (home Security System)

Scores:-
Highschool:- Avg of around 50-60% (i am guessing a GPA of 2.0, Dont know the conversion)
Junior College:- Again around 50%
Grad College:- Around 58-60%

Extra Curricular:- Table tennis, Motorcycling, Trekking, Sketching ,Photography.

Toefl:- Yet to apear:- Expected score Atleast 70(ibt)
SAT:- Yet to appear:- Expected score:- Atleast 1700 (Probably less in Math)

Looking for:- BS Computer Engineering with Credit Transfer, wish to get admitted for the Spring 2011 semester. Financial Aid is not a preference as long as maximum credits are transferred.

List of Colleges Shortlisted :-
Texas Arlington, Texas A&M CS, Texas A&M Kingsville, Univ of Idaho, Univ of Toledo, Univ of central Missouri, SUNYit, texas Tech univ.

My case:-

I have completed 3 years in a bachelor degree course from India. I wish to transfer these years as credits for the BS program in computer engineering for spring 2011.
I wish to take admission in an average college with a reasonable tuition fees and a good enough ranking.
My anual budget is around 12000$ for tuition.
I am preferring colleges with an Urban setting, and a good campus life, and availability of On campus jobs.

I will be giving my SAT On 9th October, and toefl in around a month.
Now all my applications, Physical and electronic, will be sent before i appear for the SAT.

My question is, which universities do you guys recommend based on my academics.?

I was told that for Spring admissions, the colleges do accept SAT scores after the application Deadlines. That is, its ok if I send the applications first and then send the SAT scores later on around november.

Any other colleges that you might recommend apart from the ones I shortlisted?

No one here can tell you what will transfer, each college will have to tell you.

Forget about the transfer, i am more keen to know about where i might have a shot at getting admission. And which colleges are best suited for me … from the given criteria

Come on people … please. I am really in a state of confusion, I am not getting any solid info from anywhere. I really need this.

First, you will need to take more than $12,000 out of your pocket. Transfers, and you also being international, will get negligible financial aid. Are you aware that cost of US colleges are more than $30,000 per year?

If possible, complete your bachelors in India, and then apply for graduate schools. Graduate schools will better assist you with work-study programs in terms of TA’s and other academic jobs.

I am assuming you plan to go to grad school in US. If so, I would seriously reconsider your list.
Keep Texas AM CS, SUNY Stony Brook, Texas Tech, and U. of Idaho. Remove all the satellites of Texas AM.

Also consider the following: U. of Pittsburgh, Rutgers - New Brunswick, Clemson, U. of Texas - Austin, Drexel, Purdue, Temple

thnx for ur response collegebiomed, But i am aware of the costs, i have done lots of research thats why i specified that i am roughly looking for colleges with a tuition of around 12000-15000$ and not the total costs. I have a budget of around 25000$ anually.

I am interested in undergrad studies itself.

I heard Purdue and texas Austin are very hard to get in.

My academics are very average. But i have lots of extracurricular activities, I am a sketcher, I do amateur photography, I have good writing skills in english.

Another question was that, do these universities accept SAT scores around november>? as there was no other date available before that.

Basically what my plan is tht, i would finish my Undergrad from a low to average quality school and then apply for good schools like ASU or maybe Purdue for my Grad studies.

what do u think about my idea? its my only shot because i want to change my majors from electronics to Computer engineering, hence if i complete graduation in india in electronics, then i will have to apply for electroncs as my major for Grad school.

Well Purdue costs more than $15k a year for tuition so yeah… lets say it costs an additional $12k. You can cross Purdue off the list now if you don’t have the finances or don’t want to loan more money.

yes i know purdue is expensive, hence i have not put its name up in the shortlisting have i? I am looking for average schools which are not too good but will do the job so i can later on apply for a better college for grad courses

How close are you to finishing your degree in India? Would it not make more sense to finish it there, and then to come to the US for a Master’s degree?

You need to read everything, and I do indeed mean everything, athttp://www.educationusa.state.gov/ Then you should make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live. There are several in India [EducationUSA - Find an Advising Center](India | EducationUSA) If you cannot meet with a counselor in person, find out if they can help you by phone or by email. These people are expert at helping students from India find good places to study in the US.

You also could take your question to the International Student Forum here at CC. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and scroll down to find it. There is a sub-forum just for students from India where you might find other students whose situation is like yours.

Wishing you all the best.

Clemson would be way too expensive for him

And you have a 2.0 GPA. Even being from India, I doubt you’re going to get into anywhere competitive.

I am already in contact with a counselor, he is the one whose given me the shortlisting of colleges, that i have listed in the 1st post.

But i dont want to blindly follow those guys, hence i want some advice from people like you, who are already there and who actually know which colleges have good campuses or good teachers or good surroundings or good rankings …

Univ of toledo, Texas Arlington, SUNYit, all have a tuition less than 10000$ a year. Similarly i wanted to know if there are similar colleges with similar fees and good rankings that will be good for my academic background.

hey guys come on, i need some help here! …

Moderators, Please Transfer this thread to the International Students Forums, I dont think this is the right forum. Thank you
