^I think you have to specifically request a single if you want one. The majority of honors program students in IV are in doubles with suitemates in doubles. I’m pretty sure all the freshman honors students I know who are in singles specifically requested them.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

When is the earlist/latest for dorm requests?

ALL honors rooms are doubles, unless you are living next to an RA, and then because of how the place is built you sometimes get a single. Even in the upperclassmen honors building, all honors rooms are doubles.

The rest of IV is singles, but they are upperclassmen only. Unless you have a medical reason, you will not get a single as a freshman, no matter how much you request it.

Yeah, don’t count on getting a single. I think they just had a lot of extra rooms this year. But perhaps all the people in honors who I see in singles have medical conditions.

Thanks everyone. That is good news about Freshman singles…my daughter does not want a single. Some of the threads here indicate that living in the International dorm makes it more difficult to meet people. Would you guys/girls agree?

Also, regarding the double rooms with bathroom shared by four, is there one shower, one sink and one toilet just like the singles have?

I guess it is a bit more difficult, but I’m participating in so many different student groups and whatnot that I know quite a few non-honors students.

In my dorm, the sink is in our bedroom and there is a toilet and shower in the bathroom. My friends, on the other hand, have both their sinks in the bathroom for some reason. I think my room is the most typical set-up though.

what’s the gym like? is it nice and big or would it just be better to make the walk accross campus to the marino center?

I love the workout facilities since I’m much more likely to go down two floors than walk across campus to exercise lol. But all I do is the elliptical… There are also treadmills, rowing machines, stair masters, and weightlifting equipment. I think it’s pretty sufficient. But I think Marino has all the group exercise activities and sports and the indoor track. So it all depends on what you’re looking for :)

Yeah, group stuff is in Marino. If you are just looking to do normal workouts, then the IV gym is great.

Living in IV is similar to living in WVF last year (which I did). It only is hard to meet people if you make it hard. If it’s your goal to befriend the entire school, then go join clubs and whatnot. Just because someone lives in Stetson doesn’t mean they are going to have more friends than someone who lives in the honors dorms their freshman year. I had a group of friends who just happened to mainly be honors freshman year, but that’s because I am lazy and only bothered to join clubs my second year.

I’m not disagreeing that if you want non-honors friends it’s easier if you live non-honors housing. But the claim that it’s easier to make friends not in IV is kind of faulty. The honors program gives you a hundred different opportunities to meet like every honors student in your class, plus all of the honors-only courses that keep you seeing everyone even if you aren’t good friends.

blinkangel - can you lock the door from your bedroom leading to the bathroom?

neuchimie speaks wise words :)

The lock for the bathroom is inside the bathroom and locks both doors from the inside. Thus, if someone were to pass out in the bathroom, they would be stuck and have to wait for NUPD (don’t think this has happened yet). So you basically have access to you suitemates’ room. No issues of theft yet in IV (knock on wood) and it makes it easier if you forgot your Husky card in your room and need to get back in and your roommate isn’t there.

I’m moving into IV in January, do you know what the hookup is to a tv? Is it just a cable that plugs directly into the tv, or do you get a cable box? Are you able to hookup a DVD recorder to your tv or maybe a Tivo?

I’m not the best with technology, but I’ll take a shot at answering your questions :)

I think all we did was buy a cable that plugs into the wall that connects to the TV. There is no cable box. I’m not quite sure about DVD recorders. I’m pretty sure that if you want Tivo or something, you must pay for a phone line in your room. (Each room has a phone in it that can be used for room-to-room calling and 911, but you’d have to buy something through Verizon or something in order to do more than that.)

Sorry if my answers aren’t that helpful!

Thanks. Do you know if there are printers in International Village that students can use, or do you recommend bringing our own printers, so we wouldn’t have to walk to the library every time we need to print?

No printers. And the only computers in IV only have Internet access and basically nothing else. I definitely recommend getting your own printer My roommate and I bought one together to cut down on the cost.

If you have a flatscreen (widescreen) tv, and you hook up to the cable, are the local channels in HD (high definition)? I’m just wondering, as I bought a 32 inch TV on black friday for my dorm.

Also, how fast is the internet? Can someone who is living in IV (or NU in general) run a speedtest for me and post the results? Go to speedtest.net and click the yellow star (should be Boston), and then post the results for upload and download… thanks!

download 28.27 mb/s
upload 32.93 mb/s
ping 20 ms

don’t really know what any of that means but hope that helps

also, as far as i know all the rooms have sinks outside of the bathroom. so there are two sinks, one in each bedroom, right outside of the bathroom door.

also, walking through ruggles has been perfectly safe. the more “unsafe” side of the building is columbus ave, etc, but there isn’t much to do in that whole direction anyway and you don’t head that way often. you do have to go down that road to pick up packages, but that’s during the daytime and perfectly fine.

^Not all the rooms have sinks outside the bathroom. My friends have two sinks inside of their bathroom (presumably one for them and one for their suitemate). Their set-up is different than most.

And here are my speedtest results (Idk if it makes a difference, but this is without the ethernet cable-- let me know if I should do it again with it in.)

And re:Columbus Ave, those living in IV usually walk down Columbus Ave to go to Matthews Arena for hockey games and whatnot. So you are walking there at night. Haven’t run into any trouble there myself.

i’m still looking for some good pictures or video from inside IV… anyone know where I can find any? thanks

If you are near Boston or are coming here soon, they offer a tour of International Village after the normal tour.
