BTW - I had my interview before couple of weeks ago and my interviewer told me that I might be the best applicant he has interviewed, but I dont have a chance because all the other people he interviewed were Olympiads. Come on, I am from a freaking small remote town in India, where no1 knows what Math Olympiads are...

11As.and an A...wow
Wow...great hash...i gave GCEs, was fortunate to get 3+8+1 As :)
The 8 were taught at school studied the rest priavtely, did it by parts but did in two years intead of 3( at the end of 10th grade)
We dont have As but my average for the twelve is 95%...makes an overall A star i suppose... by that it might make like 8* and 4As...anyway...you did remarkably...
Didnt gave As levels...will be giving A levels ...
predicted grades are like AAAA, A/B but the internal will cost me a lot... :(

Well i know for one thing the competetion will be tougher next year, one of my juniors got 14As in one go, lowest percentage is 95...avaerage is like 98.2....previously he got an A in Statistics(available in november only)...and was declared the Best in World...

Congrats on your SAT... dont know why u put " :( "

look at me, i am still here on this board with m 780 v 640...(3rd try)
Got 800 2c, 790 phy, w 700

and dint i tell even this year they are boys with distinctions like the Best in Physics in the World...prospective IPHO, kins already at MIT....and what not

I took GCSEs (you get stars in normal GCSEs).

thanks cres, you cheered me up :) Which country are you based in?

adides, look on the positive side. India sends the most UG students to MIT out of any Asian country, even more than China (only 11) which has a bigger population.

adides: where do you live? where did you interview? who was the interviewer?

coz my interviewer remarked about my low SATs and math marks, and said the interview was optional and he wondered why i took the trouble to travel all the way to delhi despite it having been waived...

Currently, I live in Bombay and I interviewed in Pune. My interviewer was a MIT '62 and a former faculty at MIT.
I also had a meeting/supper with MIT's India Alumni Asso. President and another MIT '65. But this was very informal. The reason for this meeting was because all of us come from the same small town in Gujarat and more for guidance. Gujju connection :)
To be honest, I would have been better off without the interview 'coz as I mentioned - my interview told me 'i dont have a chance to be 1 of those 4-5 students that MIT selects from India'.

hash - 15 is the total Indians at UG MIT. So its like 4 a year, still higher than China. But what I meant was MIT, Harvard, Oxbridge, IIT/M - are not 'national institutions' - they are 'global institutions' and in our globalized world, every1 should have an equal opportunity. Look at UC - Berk 40% Asians. Why cant MIT move with the changing times??

Well your interviewer probably said that to freak you out. Like mine did. But I silenced him, saying lots of applicants get rejected having a 1600 and 25% get accepted with <1350 ..... so there. Infact I said a lot of things which I don't wanna repeat here.

As about your second concern, MIT is first and foremost an american university and it has no need to "globalize." And what makes you say IIT/M are global institutions? :D thats the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard.... yeah, i hate them

The discussion about 'global institutions' might be carried at a diff. time on a diff. platform but the reason I believe that IIT/M are global institutions is because an astounding % of those graduates live in different parts of the world. Same applies to Harvard, MIT, Oxbridge etc. Currently, 37 global leaders (Presidents, PMs, etc.) are graduates of Harvard.... but as i said we will discuss it at some other time. Currently, finalizing my essay for Duke - so better get back on that and get some sleep

there ARE interviewers here.. i was deferred by harv without even havin an interview.. n there r like 4 ECs in dubai n i contacted each single one! sigh.. i really dun think im better off widout one tho.. wan2 giv it all i hav... nyway, u got msn adi?

P.S. - this was a survey done by a Chinese uni. with a hidden agenda (source: toi) to motivate chinese lawmakers to improve their colleges - so for whats it worth

HELP NEEDED - alright, i am all done and ready to submit my princeton app and just dont know what to write for -
Your favorite keepsake or memento

ofcourse, it needs to be 'my' favourite and any direction would be greatly appreciated

Adides,
You can't compare MIT and Berkeley in terms of student populations. MIT is a private institution and can establish its own priorities for admissions. Berkeley is public and therefore the student population represents the quality and ethnic diversity of California first and foremost. The "Asians" you refer to are Asian Americans in large part, and California citizens as well.

As for MIT admissions for internationals, it is daunting at the undergraduate level. The valedictorian at our International school last year was Indian. He had 1590/2400 and ultimately a 45 on his IB. He got into Stanford and Harvard, but not MIT. He is currently reading Physics at Cambridge.

The US press is filled with articles about the drop in math/science and engineering students among US citizens. While MIT has global reach, it is an American university first and foremost.

Obviously, MIT attracts the best and brightest from around the world. However, there are many, many other stellar schools in the US which can provide excellent opportunities as well. Good luck with all your applications.
