Internationals to Penn

umm.... we're talking about internationals here!

I just found out that there are only 5 norwegians at Penn undergrad (total). Can they adjust (say add one more for the year to make a total of 2 for class of 2010)? Or are the quotas fixed?

Here's the official College Board figures for Penn:

Financial Aid
International students eligible for need-based aid
Number of enrolled international undergraduates received aid: 223
Total amount awarded : $7,023,134

That's around 55 students a year, if you take an average.

55? tht's better than 45 of course. but 45 is what Penn said. maybe it's 45+-10 ! :) though Penn did say they give a few finaid packages to intl transfers as well!

AHHH!!! I got that letter yesterday...but I really have to apply for finaid too...Penn says one thing about the # of intl students they give aid to...other sources say something else...who to believe...well, all i know is that i have to compete for that money too. Btw, I'm applying to Wharton, Huntsman program in intl business. and i'm from Brazil.

@cdeitz60:

You don't know what you are talking about. Not applying for financial aid as an international greatly boosts your chances of admission. The financial aid packages for internationals are extremely competative.

@callthecops2:

There are no fixed quotas, if you are a fit for the school you are a fit. However, if they see a deficit in students from an area, I would guess they are more likely to take students from that are. And you are in luck - three of the five norwegians are graduating this year.

callthecops2, snipanlol, or anyone else:

how did you guys find out the number of norwegians at penn undergrad? do you guys know how I could find out the number of Brazilians at Penn?

oh yeah!! more space for me :) thanks for that info snipanlol! Where did u find that out btw?

I found it out on www.norway.org but i guess that wont help you much leo3607

Well, simply put, I know all the norwegians personally. Not very complicated. And there are actually six norwegian undergrads, and four graduationg. I guess your information was slightly faulty, callthecops2.

are they from norway directly? do you know their stats by any chance? how many of them are at wharton?

All but one are in Wharton, which has to do with the way norway finances its students abroad. And they are all ethnically norwegian, if that is what you mean (though a couple attended schools in other places).

interesting. do you know their stats? like SATs? I have 690 M, 670 CR, 700 WR (10 Essay). SAT IIs: 740 IC, 700 WR, 690 Physics. APs: 5 Physics B, 4s in English Lit, Stats, Calc AB. GPA: 4.3 UW, 3.83 Weighted, no rank. Do I stand a chance? I'm taking a gap year btw, not asking for Fin. Aid. at Wharton.

yup... i think not opting for financial aid was a difficult decision for me.. cos if i do not get a scholarship given by local government or companies.. it'd mean funding my own education.. wch is not easy.
(chances of scholarship are as such: 1200 applicants, 12 gets it.. sounds as difficult than fin aid uh?)

I've withdrawn my FA application from the last time I posted on this thread....but as I was going through admission statistics, I wondered how many apply for aid. 45 get the aid, which is no doubt a few number, but it's all in relation to the number that apply. Any figures on this?

My guesstimates...the international acceptance rate is 20% (from http://www.upenn.edu/about/facts.php ) ...so if they've written such a strongly worded letter....it would mean that the chances are significantly lower....between 10% and 15%...that's between 300 and 450 applicants, am I right in my reasoning?

I think there are significantly more applicants than 300-450 for international financial aid. Especially since the rise in ranking. However, only a few of these internationals are actually in the running, as there are a lot of random crapshot applications.

I really wanna know how many intl apply w/ aid too...
