Internations who made it to ivies and other top schools!

haha....i was right....
ronty, there arnt many guys who have flower in their nick's....so dats hw i knw... ;)

my mistake :o

flowertje, did u get my PM?

Kjoodles, no I don't wish I was at Harvard. I have to admit that before coming here and seeing Yale, Harvard, and Princeton in person, I had my doubts about my decision because I couldn't visit. But now that I've seen all three schools, I know I made the right choice in coming here. I mean all three are amazing schools. Harvard is really nice, Princeton comes very close to Yale, although it's more rural and peaceful, but Yale - only on Yale's campus do I get the feeling, that this is such a special place, and that I belong here.

Flowertje, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Hope that you'll be able to join us next year. And if you come, we'll definitely meet because I'll be one of the counselors during Orientation for International Students.

awesum...... so well all set to meet loads of CC dudes and gals..

SM

Wow you guys are seriously amazing.

Your SAT I and II stats are just exceedingly impressive, I hope I could get scores like that, and by the way, I am a junior/Canadian citizen.

I think the Bulgarian/Australian nationalities must also be a big diversity factor why some got admitted to a long list of ivies. I hope I could transfer my canadian citizenship to a Bulgarian or even a Egyptian one!

I am not particularly "bright" in my academics, yet I've spent some serious amount of time in the past few years to improve my ECs. Here's my stats, Please TELL me Honestly my chances:

I take 2 of the 3 only honours courses at my school: English Honours, and french honours.
Our school doesn't offer any AP, but I'm planning to take AP world history and european history on my own by self studying.
I'm from Canada, and here, an A standard is 86-100% (which is quite low comparing to that of the states)

Junior Year first term:
Average gpa/grade: 89%
SAT 1: April
SAT 2s: June
APs: English, world history, european hist. May (all self-study)

EC's:
Junior State of America- Princeton summer program 2005: took AP US Foreign Policy and AP public speaking and debating.

Community Policing Centre, Staff. Grades 10-11.

Library Monitor. Grades 8-11.

Student Government Candidate. Grades 9-11.

Also, I did involve in various leadership positions, especially the Junior Statesmen one. I am the coordinator for all large scale events of our chapter and meetings, and I've spent upto 15 hours each week organizing events around the school for the junior statesmen.

Junior Statesmen Chapter. Founder, Organizer. Organized and MC'd debate with attendance of 800+, including students, community members, and local media. Trained 20+ chapter members to assist recent immigrants with ESL, legal issues, education, and the naturalization process. (Chapter assisted more than 40 local families.) Grades 9-12.

Youth League Organizer, Conservative Party of Canada. Recruited a significant number of other high school students to support candidates, raise involvement in local elections, and organize political events. Grades 9-12.

Youth Volunteer, Conservative Party, Elections 2004. Canvassed Killarney on behalf of conservative candidates; provided logistics support to elections staff; recognized for willingness to contribute long hours and creativity to keeping events on schedule and promoting local candidates. Grades 9-12.

Other areas of interest (besides politics):
-I have been playing piano for 3 years already, and I still practice 4-5 hours a week.
-Swimming- Grade 8-10; Passed all 12 swimming levels and life guard certificate.

^^^^Also, I am planning to apply for NYU, Harvard, yale, upenn, princeton, rice, mcgill, georgetown, george washington, and queen's. (and possibly dartmouth/duke).

Please rate my chances.

Another 09 here:
1. Romanian
2. SAT 1580 (800V/780M) SATII 740W 800IIC 760Phy TOEFL 300 CBT
nat-l, international debate champion (I suck at American Parli though)
established an NGO, fundraised for it
3. Amherst, Oberlin, Vassar, IUB
4. Yes

JIMMY, would you mind telling us what your school's average GPA is? I was going to say that with an 89% you would need a miracle for HYP, but then I remembered that in some places that's a very good average.

Well, at my school, there isn't really any "average" gpa. Our gpa ranking system is very different from that of the US. The highest GPA one can get is a 4.0, and there has been only one or two people each year in our 500-student grade who can achieve a straight A 95+. My GPA out of a 4.0 scale should be somewhere around a 3.75- 3.8

I'd say that 89% is still a longshot for HYP. I got into Penn with an 89% (at my school too, mid-90 averages are rare), but I think that the threshold for those places is a 90% minimum. If your 89% is in fact a competitive (i.e. top 5%) average in your school, every other school outside of HYPSM is at worst a reach. You can probably get into at least one Ivy.

in my country we grade on a 10 scale, and the best students have averages of 8.5. (btw this has nothing to do with percentage correct, its just weird!)My average is 8.7 and I'm the first in my class (116 students) Nobody ever cracks the 9, so i believe it really depends upon your rank, though a high GPA in the most challenging course load is definitely important as well.

just make sure your counselor explains your grading system!!

good luck!

Killarney& flowertje

I think your grades are fine and by any standard impressive. International admission is a crapshoot and the only sure way not to get in is not to apply. To my certain knowledge the admissions officers at princeton and yale can contextualize the national grading schemes but as Flowerje suggested, it might help if the counsellor were able to articulate why these places might be enriched by having you around. The Dutch and Canadians counsellors are not nearly as effusive as Americans tend to be. Like the Brits, the style in Holland and in Canada runs towards understatement. After a truly spectacular effort in Latin my son's counsellor modestly averred that his performance was 'above average' by the standards of xxxx school. By the way Flowertje , 8.6 at gymnasium is "pretty good". Probably amongst the best in the country. Good luck. I hope you get good news soon.

Indian

Brown

1500, 780/660/720.. quite a few ec's

No aid

watercannon, did u send in a financial statement mentioning that you can afford a brown education? I was requested to send that in to Penn

That's the Key: don't request aid if you are an international and you are really really desperate to get into the top 25.

I asked Rice a few weeks ago about intn'l aid, and the admin officer said that my chances will be "better" if I don't request aid.

what if you do need aid..
well pl apply for aid coz they want it . and know its hard and try the best to be the cream of the crop too...

Its easy to say dont apply for aid. but if u dont need aid why would you apply anyways..

SM

smartmind, what country are you from? If you are a citizen/permanent resident of Canada, USA, and/or Mexico, then you don't need to worry about putting financial aid down ONLY when you are planning to apply for the ivies.

If you are from else where in the world aside from those three countries mentioned above, then requesting financial aid will be factor that will be taken into account by the admissions people.

I know that .. and well i am not a part of those countries and wel i need aid.. and wel i know for in pretty terms what applying for aid means.. but i still apply for aid..

And i am talking of intels only.. USA.. canada and Mexicans arent counted as proper intels at many places.. so no mention of that

SM

If that's the case, then I guess you just have to cope with the situation. If you do apply for aid, just keep in mind that you will catagorized under different admissions system (which undoubtedly is going to be more difficult). Yet, if your profile is truly unique, strong, and one of a kind, then some colleges will consider giving you aid just for having those characteristics.

Also, indicate on your financial aid application your family income, and if it's really not adequate to support a college education, some colleges would understand your situation eventhough they all know that there's a limited funding for internationals.

Moreover, apply for scholorships. There are millions of scholarships out there (both in USA and abroad) for international students seeking studies abroad. Perhaps ask you local government/corporate agencies/ministry of education to see if they'd like to sponsor a student like you for an education at a world-renowned ivy league institution.

Good luck.
