Around what speed is this at? What would I need to get connected? (ethernet cable etc)

Also, are there any policies about file sharing, if so, is there a limit per week etc?

Thanks

Check the ITC website through UVa for exact details about limits and speeds. It is a hispeed ethernet connection and doesn't usually have problems with speed.

There are limits about sharing copywritten files like MP3 music and the things we all love to download. Anything that's illegal to share is illegal here too and they can bring it up against you.

As for limits per week, I had a friend who the first week got a letter from ITC saying he was using more bandwith himself that 99.999% of all UVa students and to correct the problem. It gave us a nice laugh. So there must be some kind of limit, though they aren't heavily enforced

All you need to get connected: an ethernet cable. I know Windows kids have to download a SYS2 software package from the school website or something to register their computer on the network, but that is all done once you are in your room and plugged into the wall. Mac kids (like me) are only required to download and update Norton antivirus from the school website.

The ITC website is pretty much the end all be all on the rules and regs with computers on grounds --- so definitely check there for any questions.
