^you can also get decent deals on newegg.com, look for some laptops with good reviews

Eh, not exactly a similar question but, do you find that its easy to study in your dorm versus library or some other quiet place?

Eh, not exactly a similar question but, do you find that its easy to study in your dorm versus library or some other quiet place?

depends on you and your dorm. Personally, I was too lazy to go over to the library (even though I lived in Giles and it was literally right there) and would do my homework in my room. Granted, when my roommate was there, the TV would be on and I would have to allot myself twice the normal amount of time to get things done, but I would nevertheless stay in my room. When I did go to the library, I found myself working at a much better pace and understanding things more. So, in retrospect, I probably would have used the library a little more often. :)

Haha fair enough. That's better than hearing that the TV and loud music were playing 24/7.

^even if that's the way I've been studying for the last half year. Only 20 more days in my HS career

Carr, Brown, and G-A computer labs "close" at 2am. You can't enter dorms other than your own past 2am. I did manage to swipe into the G-A computer lab after 2am, but I lived in G-A. I never tried with Brown, and Carr didn't work after 2am for me because to get to the lab, you need to get into the main hallway of the building.

in terms of percentage, how extensive is the internet wireless coverage?

Everywhere that is

1.) Indoors
2.) Not a dorm room

And some of each of those. I'd guess maybe 70% of West Campus, by square footage.

Oh Joe, that must be new. I tried getting into Brown at 3 last year and it was still open

Really? Because I know that, at least this year, after 2 AM your card restricts access so you can still swipe into your own dorm, but not anyone else's. I thought it was always that way...

I haven't been to Brown recently because I lived in GA and had two closer labs, but I did try to enter once at 7:30am after an all-nighter just before the marketplace opened and was denied entry.

Also, in response to a question I previously missed, in a meeting of ITAC, OIT said that by comparing netreg data among other things, it looked like around 99% of the freshmen last year had a personal computer in their dorms. It would definitely be atypical to not own your own computer in some shape or form. Not everyone has a laptop, but almost everyone has a computer. It's managable, but you run the risk of Duke assuming that everyone has a personal computer and planning computer lab policy around that assumption. If you really do plan on coming to Duke without a computer, please send me an email at jtm10 AT duke DOT edu, I'd love to talk to you about why so the next time it comes up in meeting I know what to say.

Brown's computer cluster does not have the same access rules as Brown the dorm, since the two are not mutually accessible.
