from what i read in order to use internet in the resident halls, one must own an ethernet cable, right?

well if i were to take a desktop AND a laptop, will i need to purchase two of those? or one will do?

and im most likely taking both because i have a tendency of messing up my computers.

I believe each resident is guaranteed 1 ethernet plugin(1 computer can be connected to internet via wire).

I'm not sure if the dorms have wireless connect as well, if they do, then you will not need a cord for your labtop, unless your labtop does not support wireless connection(which it most likely does).

So to answer your question, you will NOT need a cord for your labtop, but you WILL need one for your desktop.

So you will be fine if you just bring 1 cable.

Will the connection support setting up your own wireless network router using the existing ethernet connection?

Someone on this forum (collegemom?) told me that putting in your own wireless router would be against the housing contract.

It wasn't me, but once again from the wiki

Also, you're not allowed to have wireless routers, but I set one up and password protected it, and nobody has bugged me about it. There's also wireless access in each dorm's LRC.

It's really not that big of a deal if you set up a wireless router in your room. Just hide it somewhere in the off chance an RA passes your room and sees it while your door is open. They aren't going to bring their laptops around to see where the signal is the strongest.. they actually don't really care =p
