Internet and Downloading

Hey, can anyone at Duke describe if there are any blocking of downloading programs or limits like that, etc?

The Office of Information Technology does monitor ResNet bandwidth consumption in the dorms. Basically, if you are going over 5 Gb per day, you will receive a letter; after 5 letters, the MAC address will be clamped at 64 kb/s. If you need more than 5 Gb/day, you can put in a request, but generally, OIT would prefer that you use something other than ResNet for that kind of load.

If this is the same policy as when I was an undergrad, that's an uploading, not a downloading restriction?

Ahh - right you are - downloading is limitless[/url</a>].</p>

Do you know if they block P2P programs like Limewire or Bittorrent?

Here's the policy on those, as well as a somewhat outdated analysis.

Duke doesn't restrict the use of p2p software, but they do frown upon using excess bandwidth uploading files. In the case of Bittorrent, it is often impossible to disable sharing/uploading, so if you use that or similar programs, be careful about leaving them on for long periods of time.

Well, for bittorent programs - would the ports be blocked or otherwise behind a firewall? (Which would essentially prevent any downloading.)
