Hey guys, just wondering about the internet over at WUSTL. I've heard some people say that you have to pay for the Wifi there and some people also say that it's free as long as you only register one device. Is any of this true?

I have three computers (desktop, dual boot mac) registered, plus an iPod. It doesn’t cost extra. Speed can be an issue at peak times, so I would certainly recommend investing in an ethernet cable

All free. (Well, included in your tuition anyhow :P)
Some of the dorms might have crappy wireless (like mine), so its usually recommended to use ethernet cable if you get one of those rooms. You’ll have no problem studying in common areas or in the library etc. though since wireless is often pretty good in those areas.

The internet is free and you can register it to as many devices as you’d like. I have a desktop, a netbook and an Xbox 360.

The Ethernet is pretty fast, although speeds will vary depending on who’s using it and what they’re downloading. I got download speeds of 50 Mbps at the beginning of the year. That number is much lower now since people are using the internet more.

The Wifi is fine for browsing but probably annoyingly slow if you’re downloading large files. I’d recommend an Ethernet cable.

I have troubles getting my 360 (360 slim) connected to xbl via wifi (a significant portion of the time it just times out). I would definitely recommend an ethernet cable to play 360.

On an unrelated note, just 5 years ago there was no wifi in the dorms, and you had to pay around 300 dollars for cable tv/ethernet. Now they’re free.

At the beginning of the year, the internet is always good, but will eventually slow down. The peak download speed I’ve seen was about 8 MB/s. You will definitely want an ethernet cable. I have no issues with my PS3 with ethernet, but I’ve had some troubles on wifi.

Currently running about 2 Mbps, which translates to 250 KB/s.
