Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, so please pardon me if this is the wrong section to post my query. Well let me introduce my problem. I am from India, and now going to attend an engineering college of the same. The problem is that although our college hostel to totally WiFied the heavy usage of students ( as the usage is totally unrestricted ) makes its speed fall to ~480kbps. So instead of going for the slow speed I thought of purchasing an external 3G USB modem of a reputed Indian telecom provider. Now can you guys just tell me from your experience what are your average monthly usage sans large downloads, as for large downloads I will prefer our fiber optic network available in the labs. So what do you think should my average usage be with some YouTube, surfing etc? This will help me (initially) to choose a perfect plan from the provider.

That’s actually a really good question. We have 50 Mbps at my apartment, and we definitely take advantage of it. Between the three of us, with large downloads, we probably use 100 gigs a month. I don’t know what ours would be without large downloads though…

Exactly bauman1535, we have an whopping 100mbps leased line and wet in our building there a some 250 guys, so you can very well guess the speed cut. So, without the large downloads as I can do that in my computer labs, what should be my monthly average usage? ~10gb? Between I am not a late night surfer or a movieaholic. Please give your valuable inputs.

Hey everyone, please reply a bit.

Yeah we have the 50 megs just for me and my two roommates, so it’s pretty awesome. If you aren’t streaming/downloading many movies, and are doing large downloads elsewhere, I’d guess you’d be somewhere between 1-2gb. General surfing doesn’t use a whole lot of bandwidth so it shouldn’t be any more than that.

Thanks for your reply.
