Is the internet connection in dorm rooms (such as in Revelle dorms) wireless, or wired, or both ? Thanks.

wired. it's hard to get wireless because the walls are so thick in argo/blake. it's wireless if you're in the fleets (the older dorms).

Does anyone know if there is wireless connectivity in the Warren dorms? I'm looking at Dell laptops for this fall right now.

I recommend you get a wireless enabled laptop anyway. There's wireless pretty much everywhere in the school. You may need it for doing work at the library or wherever you choose to study. I don't study in my dorm, it's usually Geisel or the LGBT Resource Center, or outside on the grass somewhere.

as a word of advice/caution. stay away from wireless connections. some students @ ucsd have the know-how to actually see what sites you go to and what you type in if you use a wireless connection. always check your squirrel mail from a wired computer.

Eh, I'm sure it doesn't happen often. The convenience of using the wireless outweighs the risk of being spied on. The government is doing it anyway. =

Wow, that's kinda being paranoid isn't it? You can always use like a firewall and such.

is there a way to encrypt the information you're sending out?

Proton, are you talking about any wireless connection or just unsecured wireless networks?

Dorms have both wired and wireless. The wireless can be bad in spots.

don't know about dorms, but if you somehow get the apartments like some freshmen do, there is wireless. i picked it up when i was there with a friend.

im talking about the ucsd wireless network.

be careful of searching in google and be careful of squirrelmail. always check those from a wired connection.

What about things lime Limewire and other P2P networks?

^^ figure out a different system to use. several people i know have had their internet connection kicked off by the school for a week because they were caught downloading.

wait...so if I wanna look at some porn, they'll see everything? Has this world gone insane?...

you can't download music or movies. But if you know how to download and make sure you don't download "bait" then SD will never know. How SD catches people download copyrighted files is from to the production companies. The production company will upload a tracking file to a p2p network then when you download it they will notify SD. If you do this too many time (3 I believe) SD will not allow your IP address to access the internet on campus.

--To avoid this just download files that are not blatant. For movies, the title has extra phrases to tell you what kind of file is it (xvid, divx). Those are usually OK. But if you DL something blatant with just the title and proper capitalization and punctuation then that file may very well be tracked.

Well that's how I caught at least

How long will SD not allow your IP address to access the internet?

the 1st time is until you meet up with a person regarding the situation. I think this is the same as the 2nd time too. The 1st 2 times is about a week.

Those companies upload fake torrents with the movie cracking team names and stuff too.. Use Peerguardian.

guys, instead of downloading through p2p, what if I download stuff through direct download, such as rapidshare and megaupload? will that be ok?

^^ i do that all the time and it's fine
