can one surf in his dorm room? (with my own laptop)

thanks

yes, every dorm room has 2 ethernet connections and each floor has a study lounge which should have wireless

UNC campus is among the most most technologically advanced around. Per news release last October:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks as the nations top university for fostering entrepreneurship across campus, according to The Princeton Review and Forbes.com.

UNC also ranked fifth among the 25 "most connected campuses" in a separate ranking that measured "the technological capabilities of the country's best schools" and cutting-edge campuses.

Wireless internet is available all over the campus.

"Wireless internet is available all over the campus." is a bit overstating it. There are many hotspots on campus, but not "all over". Additonally wireless doesn't always work where it is supposed to.

Also, not all dorms have study lounges on each floor.

You sound if you know first hand. I do not. Do you find the high rating for the campus technology to be deserved?

I don't have too many other colleges to compare to in order to definitively say whether the rating is deserved, however, I must admit that I was surprised by how widespread the use of technology is on campus (though sometimes it's a bit overkill - with computer controlled blinds and all). Many professors and students also don't know how to fully take advantage of what is available, and information on how to do so is not, say, centrally located on a website.

I spoke with a former student who found internet access virtually campus-wide. Thanks for your response.

Chapel Hill is a beatiful campus with a bright and diverse student body (notwithstanding the limits on out of state students). It is a great place to obtain a college education.

Well I'll tell you one thing, at least in the geology building (Mitchell Hall) I've never been successful getting wireless and have to be plugged into my ethernet in my office. The main internet I can even try to get wireless is from the Frat houses across the street (which undoubtedly produces a very weak signal!). However, I haven't tried other area of campus.
