Internet on campus?

I was just reading on Princeton Review's college rankings site that the school is very low-tech and the dorms have internet that is supposedly "slower than dial-up." Is this true?

You know, I don't know if it's my dorm or if it's gotten better but it's GREAT. It's just like what I had at home, and my parents are high-tech and we have fast internet at my home as well.

I'm on a land line in the dorm now, but I occasionally go on wireless. Wireless does have MOMENTS where it's noticeably slower, but I have yet to experience really bad internet.

Takes a little longer to download stuff (episode of Grey's Anatomy on iTunes took a few hours) but I think this is because they don't want you downloading anything illegal. If they can do this on purpose, they did it on purpose.

The IT team here is great, too. On move-in day there were tech people walking around the dorms helping everyone set up their internet. I had about four tech people trying to figure out why my internet wasn't working. They were soo nice and if one person couldn't figure it out, they immediately called for someone else to come over. Mine didn't work because I had a beta Internet Explorer that didn't work with their virus protection that they make you put on your computer.

Maybe it is low-tech compared to some schools... but I have only had positive experiences.

haha once you get past move-in day, its a whole new story...

the internet, in my opinion, is atrocious. for such a large amount of tuition money, you'd expect it to be much better. my roommate had to call the tech ppl countless times and it took a week or so before his problem was finally fixed. the internet randomly goes out many times which is very annoying.

even last year ( my freshman yr), I had the same experience with it. it's definitely not one of fordham's best qualities.

I'm wondering if it depends on the location, because my roommates and I have never had a single problem while on the land line... only the wireless.

yeah, i have wireless, and i have not once had a problem. i dont know why, i am lucky i guess. i dont have any land line.
for me it is perfect.

They make you install a virus protection program on your computer? I don't know if I'm liking the idea of that... For some reason that seems kind of strange.

So, would you say that it's like 56k? By better do you mean that given the price of tuition you should be provided with something faster than say, DSL? I'm curious because I know a lot of schools are hooked up to T-1 or T-3, but frankly, if I've got DSL-speed internet I won't really complain. If it's 56k speeds, then that is another story...

Well, when the internet stops cutting in and out it works fine. It's faster than dial-up by far and it's prob. around the speed of DSL (maybe a little higher). It's just that I've had way too many experiences with it randomly cutting out to give the internet a positive review; a school costing as much as Fordham does should be able to give us nearly flawless internet resources.

i think it makes sense to make you install an anti-virus program. i dont know much about computers, but lets say you get a virus outside of school...you really dont want it spreading to a lot of people in schol. and if everybody has the same anti-virus thing, then it makes dealing with it a lot easier. but maybe thats just me.
