I am a new UCSD frehsman attempting to get a Sixth College apartment ant i was wondering, what the wired and wireless internet speeds are (in mbps) and if it is worth it to bring my own router since the school wifi has a lot of traffic.

lol. you don’t need anything except maybe an ethernet cable. the internet is fine.

I second the bringing of an ethernet able.

in any case, i don’t see how bringing your own router would solve the problem. routers don’t create bandwidth out of thin air

The issue is that my sole computer will be a Macbook Air (no ethernet connectivity) so I will be reliant on the school’s wifi which could be a problem if it isnt reliable or over loaded with many students

Wired bandwidth for me a few years ago at Muir dorms and Warren apartments could hit very close to the maximum 100 mbps that most computers are capable of. It’s fast enough that you’ll never be the bottleneck.

Wireless at my friends’ places on campus wasn’t bad either, but if you’re picky and your apartment has ethernet ports available (which it should), bringing your own router wouldn’t be a bad idea.
