Internet

I've gone through the ethernet page and all, but I'm wondering if we can still use any programs like Bittorrent or Limewire while we're connected to the net from our rooms. I read the policy against Napster, but will we get in trouble for downloading with other programs (even if we're not sharing)?

I heard we can use BitTorrent clients, which is all I will need. I'm not sure about P2P though.

i used limewire all year without consequence.

Is there any way to make the internet wireless?

wireless? in your room? nope. If you were thinking about using the computer while sitting comfortably in your bed or something, you could always arrange the desk so that its right next to the head of your bed so the ethernet cord can still reach (if its feasible with regards to where the outlets are located). however i think this year they have wireless internet in the dining halls if i'm not mistaken..

approx. how long is the cord?

You can have wireless if you want to purchase a wireless router...my sister & her roommate did that last year

you have to buy your own ethernet cord, so you can pick the length yourself. They're not expensive...depending on the length, it'll likely be under $15.

That's probably something you'll want to buy at home and take there, just so you can get internet the second you're there (since we're all so dependent on it these days) and save a trip to the nyu computer store.

If you have a wireless, than you have to register that first. Don't put in LAN cable. Also bittorrent is p2p.

bittorrent and p2p work, but sometimes they have trouble finding peers due the firewall i guess and the downloads are slower than they should be

Does anyone know if NYU allows Skype and/or IRC? (probably a stupid question)

What Lena said. You just make your own access point. It's really easy, I think. All you'd have to do is connect the ethernet wire to a router or whatever and voila! wireless internet. But you'd have to make it secure (as in password protected). It's easy enough to set up.

Jack, I don't see why they wouldn't allow Skype?

....wait, i thought there was a whole thread about how we couldn't have wirelss in our dorms...

Would connecting the ethernet cable to the wireless router register the router? Meaning I can't register my computer or another router later?

Um, no, 4b3. For example, if you were using WiFi at Starbucks an hour back, does mean that you won't be able to use wireless at another cafe? No.

It's just creating your very own hotspot (um WiFi-enabled place).

yea, i know it's creating a hotspot, but if I get rid of the wireless router, can i still use the internet by connecting to the ethernet jack? mbe said that you have to register the router instead of the computer.

Ohh.

Sorry, I have no idea. But I'm guessing yeah. Are you assigned like an IP for each computer?
