Internet

What kind of internet connection do the students have at Max P? How fast is it approximately?
Also, does the University generally turn a blind eye towards students downloading torrents and p2p or are they very strict in that respect?

is at&t their main internet provider?

I'm not a computer savvy person, but the internet in Max is fast and dependable. We have wireless and ethernet, but people use ethernet while at their desks in order to put less strain on the network. The U of C is obsessed with student privacy, so they generally don't like to get involved in file sharing problems. This isn't just a University - student issue, though. The University can get in trouble for allowing file sharing, so they'll give you a warning and then a fine (I think) if your downloading or sharing a lot of material. They sent out an email earlier this year reminding students not to file share. Basically, keep it to a minimum, don't download new TV shows right after they're shown, and don't share, and you should be fine.

How wide does the wireless network extend? Is it available outside of campus buildings so students can do research outside on a nice day??

I'm not sure whether the entire campus is actually 100% wireless, but I've never had a problem with it. I'm almost positive that you can get internet on the grassy quads.

it's quite fast!

You're not really supposed to do torrents, and I of course would never do such a horrible, awful thing, but many people do. If you're caught once (which is really hard, because even downloading many gigs a day won't cause enough of a bandwidth spike to get you noticed) you get a warning and if you do it again, $1000 fine. Only one person in history has ever made it to the $1000 fine stage, the rest just stop at the warning (but again, you won't get caught anyway so it doesn't matter).

How exactly do you log onto the internet? Is it an open network or does each person get his own username/pass?

You use your UCID, which you use for everything from mail to printing to online course information.

Sorry if this thread was dead, but I was browsing and was like "hey, someone asked a question about this on CC!"
